I've got the rite ex manifold off, and removed the glo plugs, the only one I tested was good, but I wonder if the hi miles, 250k, and Veggie oil has caused the injectors to suffer, and the engine to smoke AWFUL when cold. It runs rough, but clears up in a few minutes, and gets over 1000 miles per quart, and didn't use any anti-freeze in a 4400 mile trip accross the country.

I'll check the rest of the glo plugs, but I should really change the injectors with the manifold off. So much easier!

Reccomendations? I'm gonna sell it. Got used???http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/6-5-...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

cold advance working? sounds like what mine did until i hooked up the cold advance... 2 years after rebuilding the engine! :haha:

what setup do you have installed to run the veggie oil? Sounds like poor injection quality, if you have an in line fuel heater (you DO have one right???) check to make sure thats still working. low temp veggie oil will not inject well, causing lots of soot and smoke. and eventual engine damage.

fwiw, what you describe happened to me year round. smokey rough start-ups, a few minutes later it ran smooth.

I've not run veggie oil at all...quote]

im a little confused.

BUT, this seems pretty strait forward to me. You tested glowplugs, they werent working, and the engine smokes till it warms up. Replace the glowplugs. compaired to injectors they are downright cheap.

I would say, do the glowplugs, and then look at the top of the diesel section. There should be a thread TRustyK5 put up there on how to do a diesel purge. I would do that service (yes i posted the "how to" so i can verify it works). The combination of those two services should drastically improve your engines operation.

he said the one GP that he checked was good, and i get the impression that the veggie oil was used by the previous owner - not him. I think he's wondering if the veggie oil previously used may have jacked up his injectors.

whoops... my bad, thought that said "only ONE i tested was good". i put the wrong emFAsis on the wrong syLAble. :D

I still strongly reccomend the diesel purge, its not hype, on a high mileage engine, and probably especially on a truck that ran veggie at some point.

The other thing to check, is your lift pump. I dont know how to check it without installing a pressure guage or something. But i started to suspect my lift pump was bad, with hard starting, really noisy running, lack of throttle response beyond moving from a standing stop. and it seemed like everytime the truck sat, when i tried to start it, it was like it was re-priming the system as if the lift pump was leaking and fuel was draining back into the tank.

I replaced the pump all that went away. and i even have less "exhaust smell" driving with the rear window open. Lift pump is pretty cheap to, right around $30, so it may be something worth doing before replacing the injectors. Youll need axle grease to hold the lift pump rod in place durring reassembly, the two gaskets for the fuel pump and fuel pump plate. and just be very careful not to damage the hard fuel line... i made that mistake, and have yet to rebend a new line and install it. the truck is using a soft fuel line for the time being.
