Oil pressure is at about 40-45 when cold, but drops to like 10-15 when warmed up. Any ideas?

I know it needs an oil change, bad, so thats first on the list.

10-15 at idle? or on the road? My Yukon makes 60-70 at idle when cold, and 30-40 idle warm and ~50 at running speed. Although, I have a 350 running Valvoline 20w-50 Racing blend. Thicker oil protects better imo.

Should also check your oil level. Dummy thing I know, but my parents old burb ran gradually lower pressures over the course of an oil change, and the feller at Wally world said the filter was loose and I was a quart low. Well dummy, you put it on, remember?

Still gotta change it :D

I should add, that, it goes down to that pressure after the engine is at running temp for a good couple minutes, and if I`m crusing along at 40, and pop it out of 4th into N, and rev the engine, it will go back up to 40.

My oil press. guage on my '87 'burb has read 0 for at least 3 months now, even when I get it up over 100mph. I ain't worried, stock guages are crap and rarely accurate. Mine's only accurate when I shut off the engine.:D

Well changed the oil yesterday, it was REALLY watery.

Now, when cold, its around 50-60 pounds. When it warms up, and I`m cruising at 70MPH its anywhere between 20-30 pounds, and if I pull it out of 5th it drops to about 10-15 lbs, and in 4th gear around 35MPH, its at about 10-15 lbs.

It seems to run fine when it gets like that, no noises that I notice.

What say you?

Sounds fine if you're running 10w-30 in there.:waytogo:
Well, your the second person to tell me that, so I guess I`m alright. I am however thinking of draining what I can get out of the 10w30 and put some 15w-40 in there....

How long had the last oil change been in there? If it has been daily driven before you got it, I'd worry. But if sat all winter long, barely driven, then I understand the water in the oil. If you're going to drain what you have for heavier stuff, put some Restore or similar product in it and run a few hundred miles before you change, that way any rust that may have formed can get cleaned out.

What I meant by watery was that it was not very thick, poured out like water. Didn`t mean there was water in there :wink1:

Don't know if it's the same situation but my oil pressure sending unit was leaking on my Jimmy and it had normal pressure at speed but pegged zero at idle. Replaced the leaking oil pressure sending unit and now I have normal pressure again.

Ohh, I see, must've had some of that 0w-15 junk in there. That stuff is like water when it's cold.

I've noticed the same thing on my new S10 that I bought, 177K and supposedly a rebuilt engine but I haven't found any evidence of a rebuild yet... But it gives me like 5 psi coming off the highway and like 20+ while cruising. I don't think its a big deal, the engine on my K10 did the same thing before i replaced the oil pump with a high pressure unit.
