Tranny wont shift into 3. 1st and 2nd shift fine. I can manually shift into overdrive. Changed fluid and filter and it didn't help. It dont even slip when it shifts to drive. Like it drive isn't there. Any ideas. Thanks.

got reverse? any codes? when u say it doesnt slip in drive do you mean it stays in 2nd?

Have reverse. No codes that i know of. The check engine light has been flashing for a few months. Ya it stays in 2nd. It will shift to 3rd, just noyhing there. Then it will shift back down to 2nd. Truck has 200k on the tranny.

If no codes and you have reverse. Unplug the harness at the trans. It'll default to 3rd and max line pressure. You can only do manual 2nd and 3rd but at least you'll know 3rd is there and rule out bad frictions or accumulator problems.

200K? It's on borrowed time.

With 200k on teh trans, you are probably jsut ready for a full rebuild. Hate to be the bearer of bad news....but......thats probably it. Take it to a good trans guy that will check some stuff first, but be prepared to pay for a full rebuild.

Sounds like the same scenerio when the sunshell breaks. I could be wrong but like Darren said, with 200K on it sounds like time for a full rebuild.

Sun shell affects 2nd, 4th, and reverse. If it breaks you still have 1st and 3rd.

Couldn't remember which gears get lost when the sun shell breaks. Well, it could be that his first shift goes from 1st to 3rd and he only thinks it is 2nd gear. :dunno: All of his symptoms point in this direction.

Well I guess that is possible but he said he has reverse. 1st to 3rd is a big drop. 3.06-1.00

Oops, i thought i seen he said no reverse. :doah:

Well i can say that when my sun shell broke as i started noticing a problem i did have reverse for a day or so then i had no reverse, 2nd, or 4th. Could be that it hasn't broken completely yet.

It has second. Driving down the road at 40 or so it darn near red lined. Kinda figured the tranny would go out since I put the crate motor in a few years ago.

Going to call around tomm. and try to find a used one for the time being.Wheres a good place to buy a new one from. Dont really trust any tranny shops around here.

Bowtie Overdrives are known for building a stout 700R4 but i don't know if they do anything with the 4L60E, you might want to call them and ask.

Looks like they do build 4L60E transmissions as well, at least for a 2WD vehicle. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/catalog.php?Action=GETSUBCAT&CATID=ZB2

Was just looking on their website. They have them. Truck is mainly a daily driver with the occasional towing or hauling.

If you replace it, i would at least get one with some upgraded parts, regardless of what you do with it. But the bow tie overdrive one would be upgraded anyways in guessing, even in their most basic build.

This is also a good time to add a bigger than stock cooler, and trans gauge if you are so inclined. Definitely a cooler at least.

If you replace teh trans yourself, and end up using the stock cooler (either in addition to a new one, or on its own), make sure to completely flush it out so you don't get old junk and broken parts in your new trans.
