97 cummins oil pouring out the front

My father in law has a 97 ram 2500 with a 5.9 cummins. He came up to my place and his truck was puking oil out the front of the motor. Its a significant amount, enough to make a 12" + puddle in my driveway in about 2 min of running. I thought at first it was possibly a crank seal but its a lot of oil for that. I know its possible the dowel pin came out cracking the gear-case. Does anyone have any experience with the gear-case replacement?
 
Update!

Ok an update. The gear case has a monster crack right where the cam sensor is. So at this point tomorrow I will be tearing it down to inspect the gears. does anyone know the timing procedure for this motor. I have done the injector pumps before but never taken the gear-case and all the gears off.
 
There is a great multiple video series a guy made on how to tear it down, replace the gear case and put it back together on youtube. I ran across it over on cumminsforum. I bet you could just search youtube or search over on cumminsforum and find it.
 
Demon44 is the guy to talk to here, he would be my vote as the resident 12valve expert.

Sucks about the breakage, so I'm guessing it was the good ol KDP? As much as I have read about it, I've never actually known anyone who had it happen.
 
Thanks for the info on the YouTube videos, I'll chekc them out now. Yes it was the KDP! Damn thing destroyed the gear-case and cover. Tomorrow Ill find out if the gears made it out ok!
 
KDP strikes again! Get you some wooden dowels for holding the tappets up and start tearing it down. Might I recommend Jeff Mumau @ www.MumauDiesel.com an authorized Cummins dealer for all your cummins parts needs. Its usually cheaper for me to call Jeff and order it then to drive down to my local Cummins in Nashville and pick something up.

Also there is no need to use dowels to hold the lifters because you do not have to remove the cam. That is an old procedure. Remove cam gear from cam, replace gear case, heat gear for 1 hr at 400 deg, slips right back on no prob! Aside from the broken case there was no other damage, aside from the cost of the gear case, gaskets etc. Overall it was an interesting repair and I know what to do next time......Do the KDP kit before it happens! LOL... It will be the first thing I do before installing the 12 valve in my CC.
 
I really need to check mine! I've got a 96 with "only" 253,xxx miles. My brother, jt512, keeps telling me I need to pull that cover off and inspect it. This is good motivation. Glad to hear it was only the timing cover that needed replacement.

Let me tell you pulling the cover to do the KDP kit is cake in comparison to fixing after the fact! I would check it and install the tab ASAP!
 
The dowel on my first 95 was half out when I got it. Get it tabbed or staked. Not checking it is foolish. Speedi sleeve the crank seal if it needs it don't avoid it or you'll be doing it again.


To the op, if you've done p7100 pump swap. You've done injection timing. I'd you didn't do injection timing after swapping the pump you didn't do it right. Pinning the engine and the pump is not good enough. But what do I know.

Agreed and got if figured out, however just doing pump timing is a different procedure than doing cam, crank, and pump timing. But its all good, done and good to go now!
 
Gear train timing is a line up the mark program. It's a static procedure. Nothing scary there. Injection timing is after the fact.

Thanks for your help, I found out the gear train timing was marked aside from the injector pump gear which is marked now. Im actually advancing the timing slightly because its a California truck and is lacking, then since ive got it apart putting a new IP cam plate in .
 
Right on. How are you setting the injection timing? Plunger lift or spill port? 16* is pretty much money in the bank for these engines while anywhere near stockish.

I have done both but found that spill port timing is the most accurate way to time the pumps. This is just from personal experience, what are your thoughts? 16* it is! Eventually, if I can talk him into it, it will get an upgraded turbo and injectors, but one step at a time!

I eventually want to put a cummins in my 84 CC but gotta find one at the right price!

Lol. Turbo and sticks can be a BIG step into the abyss!

Personally I find plunger lift so easy. And clean. Read the dial and your done. Especially with an adjustable pump gear. That should actually be everyones first or second upgrade IMO. Timing will never slip again. Ever.

I was telling a customer one day about needing to pull the cover and fix the pin on his dodge, a friend of his from out of town was with him (also a 12 valve owner) over heard the conversation and basically called B.S. on the whole deal. They were driving the other dodge (owned by the dude that called B.S.) when they left the shop. They made it 15 miles when the old dodge quit. Dealership charged him 4k to repair the damage caused by the pin falling out.
