Thought someone might be able to help, a friend asked and I'm not sure what to tell her . . .

She was driving and according to her the gauges went crazy, all warning lights came on, and power steering quit working. She pulled off the road just in time for the car to die.

Restarted in a few minutes and everything ran fine. Where do you start looking? Obviously she's afraid to drive it much now . . .

Fuseable link, and battery connections should be a start. Check to make sure the battery cables aren't showing signs of corroding from the inside out.

Battery connections are what I thought of first, but what's with the power steering? I never work on newer vehicles, so i don't have a clue if the p/s needs anything electrical . . .

The car stalled. All lights came on like during key up. Power steering went when engine stalled. Does it have any crank sensor codes? They are a known failure.

Pm me for more details.:D

More intelligent sounding than my response. Listen to this guy :haha:

read the title and that will tell you the first major problem......these cars are known to do strange things and never do it again.....

Some of the 97's have magnasteer built into the ABS module. If the ABS has a fault or it's power is lost, the magnasteer turns off. This gives you less assist than normal at low speeds and more assist than normal at high speeds (meaning it is now regular, non-speed-sensitive power steering).

If "All warning lights" came on, it sounds like the power is cycling and it's not just a stalling engine. A known failure point is the ignition switch, which is actually a number of switches together inside the steering column.
