Ok a friend of mine has a Gmc 2500 with a 6.5 I posted up a while back about it not running right well as of yesterday they found out why there is a 4 inch crack in the block. Well this truck is pretty dang clean body is real nice and everything works good except the motor. Now he said I can have it for 500 bucks. Two questions

1. Is the 6.5 worth trying to find, and whats a decent price for a used 6.5 everyone around here seems to want an arm and a leg.

2. How difficult would it be to swap to a gasser

6.5 had huge mileage related cracking problems with heads mostly.

if me and a 6.5 only whay i would go is full reman motor with warrenty.

then to swap to gass its not that hard. just like others. swap in gastank sender with pump. add in fuel filter . change exaust . change some wireing around. and few others that will pop up along the way. but if you have inspection rules like 96-up has to plug in to obdII plug then sorry wont work easy.

i would just find a good 6.5 reman and drop it in and go.

converting a diesel to gas.... heresy, ill pretend i didnt hear it.

my advice, would be a reman 6.5 shortblock, before you install it, contact heath diesel. get a stud girdle for the lower end, a fluidamper for the crank survival, use ARP head studs, and use hardblock in the lower end of the block to strengthen it. and not worry about the cracked block/crank anymore.

what about the heads that crack a lot ?

A friends dad had a ****load of head problems with a 6.5 in a 95 3/4 ton. I heard about block cracking issues the 6.5's have too. I would avoid one, but with a quality reman longblock, the engine would probably last longer than the rest of the truck.

If you could find a parts truck you could just swap the entire harness from one to the other for the gas conversion. alot of work, yes, but I wouldnt try to do it any other way.

Cummins swap?

Ha yeah actually a mechanical cummins swap crossed my mind

It just seems like too nice of a truck to just let it go. Yeah im not a really much of a fan of the 6.5 but hey

by the time you get a reman and do the install... you could have made a huge upgrade by going to a first gen Cummins...

just my 2 cents...

first of all what is your budget for this? The good reman jobs address all the flaws of the 6.5 while producing more power too, but at a high cost 5k +. It may sound like a lot at first glance but what a nice truck you would have when done and what can you buy to top it for 6k?.

Ha Ha not yet but I will go snap a few pictures I know how the brotherhood is about there pictures.

I havent really set a budget yet but im lookin to get a fullsize pickup (I have an S-10) Im not against a diesel (just not really a 6.5 fan) So I guess if I could get this project going I wouldnt mind putting in 2 grand or so I just dont want to put an assload of monet into a boat anchor

Ok ive been looking just kinda lookin around and well what all goes into a 4 or a 6bt cummins swap then I would have somthing

Check out "demon44's build, project kick ass, in the driveway build section. He originally was using a 3500 of the same era and had a 6bt in it, IIRC he may even have the engine mounts for sale in the classified section. As far as what goes into it, that can vary a lot !!!!

for sure this is what you want to see in a chevy. I've done it. its not that much work, if you're going to be swapping an engine anyways. I yarded the 454 for the cummins, and converted from stick to auto. so there was some added work on that end. go that route. :thumb::thumb:

Sooooo after sme reading its painfully obvious that the current auto tranny will probally have to go seeing as an adapter plate and standalone computer thing are needed. Time to look around for a donor 6bt cummins

I would buy the controller to keep the 4l80e... Its a good trans.

Also if your not towing huge loads the 4bt would probably work for you.

Yeah not hauling any real heavy loads its kind of a pita to find a donor pickup around here cause everyone drives the damn things till body rots off the wheels
