Educate me. I have a lead on a 98 Chevy extended cab with a 454 & allison tranny that I would like to swap into my 83 k5. What's necessary, pitfalls, etc.

Definitely not an Allison. They didn't come out til later.

Probably a 4l80e.

Decent swap, but both the trans and motor will need to run off of their computers.

Motor shouldn't need any real adapters, just need to figure out trans mount and transfer case

Would this bolt to a 700r4? Is this truck a passenger or drivers side drop??

It will probably bolt up, but the 454 will kill a 700r4 quickly. You'll be miles ahead making the 4l80e work. One of the best auto's out there for this generation.

Transfer case will be opposite your straight axle.

I can never remember which is which. But I think you are correct. Straight axle is passenger side drop, newer is drivers side.

The 98 would be a drivers drop T-Case and I would recommend making the 4l80e work too. You can put a passenger drop t-case behind the 4l80e as well.

Ok. Got to see the truck today. Turns out it's a dually and only a 2wd but I bought it anyways. Here is the tranny. Ok guys, what is it?

Definitely a 4L80E. Its comparable to the TH400 but with electric and overdrive. Use this.

You have everything there to swap the engine and trans. Mod the harness and tune the ECM. You will have to get the trans worked for 4x4 or run a divorced case.

If you rebuild the trans for 4x4 you will have 2 options for VSS. In the trans itself or in the transferase tail housing. Both have things that go with them to setup properly. I prefer to put the VSS in the transmission that way you could still run a cable driven speedo and not worry about any type of low range switch for the transmission shifting.
