My father has a 98 GMC Suburban C1500 that has spongy brakes. Two different mechanics have diagnosed the ABS module as bad. They have tried to re-bleed the entire system including the module itself with no luck. Oddly, we can't seem to find a replacement module, remanufactured or otherwise, from any supplier. Anyone have experience with this? I find it hard to believe that none of the vehicles from that era can be repaired because this module is not available.

Late 90's chevy trucks and suv had crappy low pedal feeling brakes. I am not saying your abs module isn't bad, but after replacement they might not feel much better. iirc gm was sued over the abs system on these vehicles.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've come to the conclusion that the ABS controller is not available as a new or reman unit anywhere, other than possibly a dealership which we won't be paying for. imiceman, I appreciate the offer but I live a few hours from my dad so by the time we mess with it he's better off going to junkyards in his area. FWIW, that link on summit doesn't pan out. When you actually put in the make, model, and year, you get a not available message. I had the same thing happen on NAPA's site. I put in the vehicle info and searched and appeared to get a hit. Closer look, it had cleared the vehicle info and it was a generic listing for an ABS controller. Re-enter the vehicle info, and no dice, not available.

Wes, I think we are just going to have to get one and try it. The brakes are noticeably worse than they used to be, a year or so ago, much less compared to when they were brand new.. Of course the issue is that any junk yard controller is going to be the same age as the one on there now. I am surprised there isn't a better a solution for this, or a least some type of hack to bypass the controller and go old school.

At work we had 99 Tahoe once a year, it would come in with brake complaint, brakes were always good. Truck would stop, just felt soft. We would re pad front and shoe rear, even thou linings were above 50%. This would appease the user for another year. We sent that truck to salvage this year. To bad really was a nice truck except for the brakes.
If it were mine the whole and system would be it the trash
