what is the sensor on top of the fuel pump on a 98 suburban?? not the electrical connector for the power supply but this looks like a sensor ..has a electrical plug on it and pushes down into a small hole in the top part of the fuel pump!! the reason i am asking is the replacement pump did not have the hole to plug the sensor into , so i left it plugged in but loose on top of the tank!!..also on the old pump where the lines hook up the middle tube was non functioning...on the new pump the middle tube was open as if for a vent hose or something....i left it alone also!! just wondering why the difference in the two pumps.......i installed the new pump and am having no problems , codes or ill effects , thanks

what does RFI mean exactly??? the power harness plugged right in ..the other plug had a sensor of some type on it that had a small plastic tube on it with a rubber grommetthat went down into the top of the pump into a 1/4 ich or so diam. hole( this is the old pump) the new one did not have this hole in the top of the pump for this sensor to push down into it ...so i left it plugged up but laying on top of the fuel tank...i told him about it and he said that he bought the pump of of ebay for $ 89.00 , so i'm sure it was a cheap knockoff....but i drove it quite a bit and it ran fine and threw no codes or anything ...i was just curios as to what this sensor is( tank vacuum sensor or something to that effect?)

The sensor with the grommet is your fuel tank pressure sensor. It works with the ecm for evaporative emmision data.

the fuel pump that he ordered of ebay did not have the hole for the grommet on the top of it ....so what will happen running it like that? anything bad? or would it be worth it to drop the tank and drill a hole for the sensor?

Sorry for the late reply I forgot about this one. The sensor will never see a pressure change. Which should turn on the engine lite. The pump assembly may have a place to drill but I would recommend getting the proper pump.
