Is it worth putting a 14 bolt into a 99 silverado in place of it's worn out 10 bolt? Is it possible? Thanks

A semi floatin 14 bolt, could be a fairly easy swap if you find one from a 90's LD 3/4 ton pickup. problem is you loose disc brakes, which my or may not be a concern to you, and the spring perches would probably need to be moved. I am also unaware of how the ABS works in those trucks so that might be another issue.

Why ditch the ten bolt?

If they are so bad, why has GM been building them since the very early 70's in cars, and later in the trucks.

While I agree they arent as strong as a SF 14 bolt, they are plenty strong for 95% of the people who DD a chevy pickup. If they werent they would not have been in production for so long.

Gm built them because they are cheap and is a good axle for dd use and mild play use.

Yes for most people it is a good axle but when ya start putting bigger tires and adding more power to these newer trucks the axle just don't hold up.

Oh yea, I broke the 10 bolt spider gears (no gov-loc, open diff) in my 86 on 33's, I knew it wouldn't hold up to anything else so I pulled it for the rear dana 60.

They are barely adequate in a pickup used by the average Joe. Many have failed during normal use, even more just with the added weight of a Suburban body. Even a soccer mom can kill them easily.

My buddy loves them, He's made a ton of money fixen them over the years cause they all brake sooner or later.
