Step dad says his temp gauge isn't going up very much, and is getting little to no heat. Time for a thermostat?

sounds like a stuck thermostat,or really low on coolant.check the coolant level first in the radiator.if its full id replace the thermostat.
My friends Ford Explorer had the same symptoms today--after seeing what a nightmare job taking the water outlet off it is to replace the thermostat,I suggested he shove a peice of cardboard between the radiator and grille,till it warms up a bit tomorrow--he did just that,and it was throwing good heat about 5 minutes later..it aint the right "fix".but its better than freezing your butt off!..
