Now THAT'S what I call an update!!! :waytogo:

I always like to see a bunch of pics. That sandblasting spot is perfect too.... when you are finally finished with that aspect of the build you can just drop a truckload of loam over the top of all that messy slag and throw some sod down there. No cleanup required! :D

Your fitups look insanely good... no gaps or ugliness where the tubes meet. I like how tight you are keeping everything to the original hardtop as well. Nicely done!

EDIT: So.....are you going to make the commitment for BlazerBash 2019 (50th Anniversary)???? :deal:

nice work as always man!! lovin' the big pic dump posts. :thumb:

"that's it"...really???:haha:

Looking incredible man!

As for the alternator, you'll prolly want something just so you don't crush your battery too bad. What case will you be using? I have my old 12si(I think) that I can send you for initial startup if you want it.

Thanks Guys. It was a good weekend of progress. I don't think that I even backtracked once.... ;)

I'm starting to get pretty good at coping the ends. A lot of time has been spent with the 4.5" flap though. :eek1: I sure wish that I would have picked up a notcher in the beginning. I think that it could have saved a ton of time.

I've been on the Summit wishlist throughout the day...Damn they have a lot of chit to pick through.. I mean really, 8 pages of just stat housings. :doah:

And to Greg: I filled out my reg spot in the 50 year thread. You guys can't be going to a 50 year anniversary , without at least one 50 year old rig, right? :wink1:

Thanks Brian.. :waytogo:

Alright, dumb question for the day. :doah:

Water Pumps- Clockwise would be a normal old skool pump with the v-belts, right?

Counter clockwise would be the newer, reverse rotation that I have read about, that you need on the serp set ups..

Anyways thinking about this one. I need the Long, due to the set up I picked up at the junk yard.

Thanks...

I got the edelbrock which is more money but was the only one I found at the time for reverse rotation. Weiand is owned by Holley and is usually good quality. I notice they also have a more expensive pump, don't know what the difference is. Maybe stamped vs machined impeller or imported I would guess? I wouldn't be afraid of that weiand you linked, Holley is a good company.

Every little bit helps on the weight, less weight can be free horsepower and less stress on parts, especially on the front.

Like all things on this rig. If there is a more expensive one out there, I probably like that one more.

Thanks again.

The summit wishlist is in full affect the last two days.

Oh, and I got a tracking number for the carb yesterday.....:woot:

Mike,

Do you have a plan for the initial startup of that motor?

I'm assuming you've got a "high zinc" oil planned to help break in the cam, etc... hopefully you have (or are buying) an oil pump primer that attaches to your drill and drops into the dizzy location to pre-lube everything???

I know Scotty always preaches not to break in a new motor with headers, but I think that's mostly because a new motor runs hot and will burn off the coatings in a hurry. As long as you're cool with that I don't know that it matters much. You do need to have a full exhaust too though... the neighbors will appreciate it as well.

Hope you're planning to get some video of the first startup? :deal: I'm really curious to hear it burn it's first drops of fuel after travelling 6000+ miles like it was some kind of super-hybrid!!!

I plan to put together a list of all of the components that I plan to buy here within the next couple of days. Hopefully you guys can take a look at them and give me the nod.

I have a new neighbor that moved in. I guess he grew up in the home, but when the parents passed he used it as a rental. Nice place though. Anyways, the guy is a complete motor head, although a Furd motor head. He has been running me through a lot of the stuff for the start up. I never knew about the oil pump primer before he mentioned it. Now it's on the wishlist along with a bunch of other stuff.

The oil, I need to look back at Scott's old posts, as I read along time ago he had a favorite break in oil. If not, I'll use the Royal Purple as the neighbor has suggested.

Didn't know about the full exhaust though. I suppose it's for back pressure, along with 20 minutes of my garage sounding like a drag strip at 2k RPM.

With the headers being so chopped up now, I'm not to worried about the coatings. If all goes well, I'll send them into get coated once I get back on the body work.

Don't you worry about the vid. It will be posted in your original build thread, my thread, facebook and where ever I can get somebody to watch it. I'll be pretty proud if this all work out and it's a good on start up. As you know, the ton of hours and $$$ that go into these, I'm guessing just the sound of that engine will push me through the next 6 months to a year that I have left.

Trust me, I'll be throwing out all kinds of questions from now on. I can't remember the last time I've been so excited and scared all at the same time.

When I started my 489 first time I was open headers... Of course I didn't have to go through a cam breakin, so it was 10 minutes of playing around adjusting timing and idle, etc after it warmed up. I just had the truck backed halfway into the garage with the door open. I apologized to the neighbors later and they just said that it was loud but it sounded good. My wife on the other hand thought that was the way the new engine was always going to sound. She mentioned later that day that we were going to need earplugs to ride in it.

Royal purple breakin is fine. Or get the Valvoline VR1 racing oil from the parts store, that is high zinc.

Also, if you have an old distributor you don't mind ruining, you can take it apart and grind the teeth off the gear and cut the advance plate off the top of the shaft, put it back together and you made an oil primer for free. Just make sure the teeth are ground past flush, you don't want it rubbing your cam gear.

AS soon as I'm finished with the Jimmy I will be doing the break-in on my 80 Malibu. Plan on open headers as well. The 600hp 454 should be loud. I'll have to clear it with my neighbor across the road...she a county sheriff..and works nights

I'll tell the neighbors on start up day, but they all generally stop into the garage on their walks around the circle to check on progress.

I get more grief from the neighbors on when this thing is going to be started than everyone else. One of them stopped my wife at the store two days ago asking when I'm going to be done. I tell ya, their relentless on my time frame. :D

We may have a block party, if all goes well. :haha:

I want to come to that party!!!

That's gonna be the best feeling you've had in a long time I bet!!! I know it was for me.

I just remembered you have a roller cam. No breakin oil is necessary for you. It won't hurt, but with a roller cam you're good to go, no 20 minute breakin necessary either. I'd just run conventional oil for the first 500 miles or so and then switch to synthetic.
