It's threads like these that make me rethink the small block plan I have.... big blocks rule!!!!! You guys are killing me:haha:

thanks, now i've gotta clean the coffee outta my keyboard... :doah: :haha:

it's weird seeing green zinc on everyone else's project...

Well that's perfect! On a side note (not to thread hi jack here) but how far would one move their engine crossmember forward if they were to install a big block? I figure I have to move mine to clear TPI stuff anyways, why not be prepared for a possible future big block:whistle:

Not real sure yet. From what I've read, the 1"BL sure does help, but you're still going to be into the firewall some.

I'm going to try to leave mine in the stock position and just work on the firewall. I think Greg even moved his back some, while others are using the next holes up on the frame and moving it forward by an 1"-1 1/2".

As far as the cookies comment, I've been laughing at that all morning. I do believe that it may end up in my sig before to long. :D

Oh baby! :saweet:

You're really getting after it... Are you going to use zinc as the base coat?

With regard to BBC placement in general, the main interferences will be the distributor area and the upper corners of the valve covers at the firewall. A body lift will help, but you'll still need to do some hammering or metalworking to get the clearance you need. Remember, it's not enough to clear the valve covers....you want enough room to also allow you to REMOVE them for valve adjustments.

It might be tempting to move the motor forward to avoid the extra work, but you'll be moving a heavier engine even further over the front axle....not a great idea for balance. Mike is right, I actually went to extra trouble with mine and moved the BBC back about 2" further than stock to get the extra weight more toward the middle of the truck.

for the record, since Greg mentioned it.... i do zinc engine parts, especially AL stuff, BUT it's best to use it in it's intended way, just a couple thins coats prior to paint... as with any other zinc apps, if it's gonna sit around, scuff it before overcoating...

Well it took over a week to get this clean, but I think that it came out really nice. One thing that I learned on this part of the build is my hate for casting overflow.:doah:

It seemed the cleaner it became, the more the casting marks stood out. I didn't like that to much, so out came many different grits of roloc discs.

On with the pics....:woot:

The timing chain cover bolts will change to black when my order from summit comes in with the dizzy. I think that I'm going to need to change the color of the VC's to black also. Just looks like to much Chevy orange to me.

What do you guys think?:dunno:

dude, i luv you man... :haha: truly somebody who thinks like me.... :doah: my sympathies! :haha:

i'm the same way, i love smoothing stuff out like that.. pebblegrain, ridges, etc...

i hate to even admit this.... but when i did the 396 for my blue chevelle, i did the whole lifter valley before it went out for machine work..... oil would flow back down from the heads at mach 2! :haha:

looks awesome... very, very nice detail, me likey!

oh, and yeah, the vc's black with milled tops would look great imo....

Thanks Paul, I was thinking of you while I was doing this. :eek1: :haha:

Didn't really know what you where always talking about on, smooth this and smooth that, till I was there.

Those ridges just don't look good.

But, it's all nice and silky smooth now...:doah::woot::pimp: :haha:

Did a little :hack: , without the :hack: today.:D

The replacement front quarter panels come really close to the inside of the tire radius area. They also had a super sharp corner that would have given me trouble down the road.

Now it looks like I can start to re-due the back section again, as I want to have more clearance in the rear area also. I should have followed my gut the first time I was back there. It was fun enough to get that inside lip right the first time.

1 step forward, 1 step back :doah:

I plan to open up my rear wheel wells the same way. Did you just use a cutoff wheel for that, or what? Your welding/finishing is impressing the hell out of me. You're not even going to need any filler in this thing! Looking great.

Thanks Brother,

I ended up doing all of my cutting with a 4 1/2" cut off wheel in the Dewalt.

As far as the No filler here, the pics are a lie, sorry to say. :doah:

I'm currently living in the best of both world's .Body work on the drivers side quarter and sheet metal work on the passenger side quarter panel. Life can't much better than this, let me tell ya.

I'd say good rule of thumb applies with the quarter's...If you need to do more than one patch...Buy the full panel and just do one cut and one weld.:thumb: Some stuff, you just can't work any more without bringing in a shrinking disk. Maybe I'm wrong, but you can only beat something so long before it gets bigger, then what..

In the morning I'll through up some good pic's of the work so far...Good and bad..:popcorn:Been sandbagging A little, just waiting to see how this is all going to work out.

All in all, I feel like I'm giving the old girl some respect...She should leave the garage in better shape than she came in..:dunno: :D
