nicely done Mike.. good to see another not content with a 9 minute sawzall job...

i think if the front is a tube bumper at that height, it would be sweet...

Thanks Paul,

Here is what I had in mind for the bumper. I have seen a few front fangs cut off, but none with the lip followed through to the front. It would be a ton more work, just trying to figure out if it will look good.

Here is another with it removed.

that looks good... i'd be curious to see the inner structure up front there... on my sec gen, where the inner gets flat at the bottom is a perfect spot to section the outer sheetmetal up to..

how much of that "flat bottom" are you gonna plate? like a lip down the fender, then bring it over to the inner structure more up front where the flange and 2 bolts on the vertical are?

heck, it'd be easier to draw in paint than describe.. ;)

Yep, that's what it would look like. The body line ( flat area above the lip is 2") so basically your top red line would be 2" down from the main body line. I would then weld the lip all the way around to the back side.

I'm trying to download paint as I type. If I can figure it out, I'll draw something up.

It would still be like the pic above. The pencil line would be the cut (2" down from the body line). I would then weld the lip to the bottom of the cut all the way around to the front.

if ya remember mine, I found that thick stuff made for awesome bottom plating... really stiffens it up, gives you one very solid surface to maintain a bead on, and drag the sheetmetal into it.. if that makes sense... like 12 g is nice, think I ran 1/8..

it looks like I get into it a bit on the rear of the front fender on about post # 1938.. i actually haven't finished the front... it is on my shortlist tho...

there are a few random shots of mine. I boxed in underneath and its now a one piece front end. You can take the grill, and headlights out and that's about it. Otherwise the core support and front fenders, inner and outer come out together.

Here is what I'm thinking for the front fang. Have not cut yet, but the idea is to bring the "lip" all the way around on the bottom to the front of the rig. You guys think that will look like it's to much or will it give it a nice finished look?

Mike,

That's an awful lot of material to remove for tire clearance... Remember the tire moves BACK when it articulates UP, so you really don't need to do much in the front fang area to make things clear...

Worm drive saw for bodywork?..... Buwahahahaaa! Good one, I just noticed that.

Well, what do you guys use when your out of cut off blades? :eek1: :haha:

I had to use it for my fancy 2x4 blocking of the fender. Once I cut the inner lip out, the fender took all kinds of different shapes. Maybe I should take that pic out. OSHA sees that 8d pinning the guard back they might try to shut my garage down.

On a serious note, if I remember correctly, you had a 4" lift and 2" BL, with 38's. Did you ever get into trouble with the front fang?

I see a lot of guys doing the front. I'd hate to get it into final paint go out and have a bunch of rubbing, or worse. I know that I shouldn't but I'm presently still looking at the 39.5 pitbull rockers.

Thanks for the help..:thumb:

I ditched the front tang more for fear of a rock biting it as it went under the bumper. I have recently been thinking of doing the same to the rear. The driver's side has already been hit down there.

I'll have to check my photo archives to see if I can find any good source photos for the front fenders...

On the side where I did the big "pizza slice" fender experiment, i shifted the entire front curve forward about 2".... But i preserved the way the "fang" curved back underneath towards the tire. On the DS, I recall that the fender had a slight nip taken out of the fang area but nothing major. I'd never rubbed on the front edges....always on the rear edges (closest to firewall)

Here's a clear shot of the pizza slice fender and the fang curving back toward the tire. No rubbing at all...

Pic3.jpg

Keep in mind, the curve itself is about 4" larger overall and it IS shifted forward...so there is more clearance at the front than normal. Still, if you dropped a plumb line down from the fang you will see that it actually falls across the sidewall of the tire.... That should be a good indication of just how severely the axle/tire moves backward under articulation.

Then again, my front axle was also moved forward about 1" too.... so I would have had a more severe interference issue than normal if I hadn't done something about it.

I'm running a 1" body lift and 2.5" lift springs in the front with 36 13.50 IROKS.
I reshaped my fenders also. I wanted to keep it as close to stock looking as possible, so I just raised the fang up about 2".

I also moved my axles.

The last pic is at a competition I just went to and there were plenty of full stuff hits and didn't even come close to rubbing.

Thanks for the pics everyone. :waytogo:

Dennis, that is a cool mod. I just really can't figure out how you did it though. Did you actually cut 2" from the middle, push it up and weld.

I kinda have it figured as a cone, you cut 2" from the middle, place them back together, the smaller piece will fall into the bigger, would it not?

More pics would be awesome, if you can find some.

Oh, and how did those mirrors work out for you?

Thanks,

Didn't get a lot done during the weekend, but what I did I'm fairly happy with.

Spent all the time working on finishing up on the fender trimming. I have one complete and the other I need to do some more banging and fill.

Not very exciting, but here are the pics.

And here is the drivers side.

Pic of the welds from the inside.

Kinda beat into shape

The first coat of filler. The passenger side ended up being about the same amount.

Hopefully I can get both 100% this week. I'd like to start to figure out the inner fender and some kind of slider system next weekend.
