A 80's Chevy C60 flatbed would be a...?

My buddy sorta inherited an early 80's Chevy C60 from his step dad's building supply when he sold it. 350 2 barrel and a 2 speed rear end. That's about all I remember. Oh, 4 speed with granny low so I'm thinking SM465?

What's the "weight rating" on this thing? 2 tons?
 
Yes it is a 465, but they are quite a bit different. The bottom bolt holes on the bellhousing are threaded and the input shaft is different among other things.
 
He just wants to know the specs on it. He doesn't plan on keeping it or parting it.

I have hauled 500 bushel with one. That would be 30,000lbs and thats not the box or the truck. Maybe not legal but it would do it without a wimper.

Oh, in that case. That's a pretty vague question. In the mid 80s they did some weird stuff. I have actually seen some C50s in my shop with higher Gvwrs than some C70s. It all depended on how it was ordered and spec'd.
That being said, I've seen them range from 15,000lb to 21,200lb. The info should be on a tag in the door jamb for your particular vehicle.

In terms of "1 ton", "3/4 ton", "deuce and a half", "5 ton", etc where does this rate?
 
7 ton to 10 ton. I would say at least deuce and a half to 5 ton of course I don't know anything about army trucks. I will just say it could haul a lot.
 
Gotcha.

Hard to compare to a Deuce and a Half or 5 ton since they're infamous for being under rated and guys loading them with half a house and not being able to tell the difference between 2 tons.
 
It will have more power that either of those. Frame may not be as strong but the drivetrain is pretty tough. Mpg not so good though. Ours would run faster than it had brakes for.
 
I doubt it will have more power than a deuce or a 5 ton. A 2 barrel 350 isn't all that hot. I know the Deuce's multifuel's hp rating is somewhere in the mid 100's or so, torque has gotta be much higher than a 80's 350 too.
 
IDK ours would run 65 right against the gov with 37000lb+. Remember its geared to the nuts.
 
True. He did say it has the two speed rear.

When you said power I thought you ment engine power and not speed.
 
I did mean power but Idk it just always worked great. Now have 2 bigger trucks with less power per lbs.

Also it sounds odd to have a 350 as a 366 big block industrial engine would be more common. Im not trying to say you or he is wrong about it having a 350 just the 366 is the most common along with the 427 and 454 tall deck engines.
 
Lots of c50-c60 here have 350s cause farmers are cheap. They run good.
 
I heard some of those had stainless crankshafts? Anyone ever seen one?

Twin screws had 2 or even 3 speed rear axles. On 3 speeds they ran both in low range for 1, front in low, rear in high or vice versa for 2, I don't remember, and both in high for 3. Most 3 speed setups got simplified to 2 speed after about the first time it didn't work right.

Typically if these trucks have a 350 they will have an SM465 4 speed and if they have a big block they will be a 5 speed. 366s and 427ts are pretty common. I have never personally seen a 454t though they are listed and I'm sure they're around somewhere.
 
When I was in highschool, a friends dad had a 73 or 74 c65 with a 292 strait 6. loaded you were limited to about 45. also had a sm465. Then we put a 366 in the thing, it got sold not long after that for whatever reason.
