I am looking for that great combination of a lift and tires for my truck. anyone have any ideas. i have a 1979 gmc jimmy full size

You need to decide what tire size you want to run because that will dictate how much lift you'll need or combination of lift and fender trimming.

You also need to decide the use of your vehicle. Is it mud running, rock crawling, desert running, a combination of all, or just mild off-roading to camping sites. Your intended use will mostly determine what lift you want and the size of the tires. I use mine for off-road desert exploration so 6" of lift and 35's are adequate for my needs. If I was mud bogging or hard core rock crawling, that wouldn't cut it.

i'd have to say, more toward a mild off roading and also a good runner for high school. i was originally looking at a 8 inch lift with 35's but that would be a little crazy

I'm running 35's with a 4" spring and 4" shackle flip out back and a 6" spring up front and i think it looks pretty good and it is as much lift as i wouild ever go. I can still rub the 35's on the rear of the front fenders (i still need to trim them). I personally do not like body lift but a short lift and a small body would also get you in the ball park of your needs. I would definately recommend doing at the minimum the 4" shackle flip in the rear plus any additional lift you might want in some other form (either a spring or zero rate).

well can i take my stock shackles and turn them around or something i also was going to take my old leaf springs and take them over to my uncles metal shop and re-ark them

Try looking here: http://www.coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170627

you only need 6" lift to run 35's w/o fender trimming (why would you use 8?).

If you are on a budget, try 2-4 lift and get some 33's. The stock running gear will hold up to reasonable amounts of abuse with 33's, you won't run into driveline problems, and the steering problems will be minimized.

id recommend 4 inch lift and minimal fender trimming as needed.if you dont want to trim fenders you can do a 2 inch body lift with the 4 inch lift.i wouldnt go any more than that, but you will be able to run good with that and not rub the fenders too bad if you are just doing mild trails.ive heard of rearching the springs but i don think it will last for as long as a new set of spring that has been built with the lift in them already.

What's your general area like around you? If it's Pulaski, WI. you don't need any more than 4" lift and 33's or 35's. There's nothing real serious around that area except for the occasional mud hole. Besides, you mentioned for running back and forth to school,..............hence no money.........so keep it mild and simple for now.:D:D
