OK, I have never experienced a cracked flex plate. What does it sound like? I have been chasing a tapping noise for a while, I thought was a lifter. But I loosened and over tightened, then adjusted correctly but the tapping was still there. Never made a change in the sound. So, I guess what I'm asking is does a cracked flex plate sound like lifters tapping?

Both of the flexplates I've had that cracked, there was no mistaking where it was coming from.
Loud, continuous clattering coming from the bell housing and a vibration at higher speeds,
Pull the cover and rotate the engine over using a prybar or big screw driver to pry the ring gear around.

Look for even hairline cracks between the "lightening" holes in the flexplate.

I had one that I said screw the noise, and kept driving it. After about a month, it broke completely off leaving the engine unable to turn, as it wedged itself, pushing the torque converter back into the trans. replaced the trans after that too.

Have you checked for an exhaust leak? I know I had an annoying tapping that I thought was my lifters then I realized I never retorqued my header bolts after the initial install......just a thought

I have had some that sound like a spun bearing they knock so loud.

Yeah mine always sounded like a diesel and people would ask me if it was. :haha: Then when I tore down the motor there were cracks through the bolt holes of the flex plate to the large 'lightening' holes.
