Im pretty sure my rear and front ends are leaking, not a ton, but some drips under both of them a few times a week. i was thinking about pulling them off and changing any fluids, iv never worked on this sorta thing before so i wanted to see if there is anything i should know before i start pulling bolts off.

Is there a special way of removing these covers without getting fluid all over the place?

i also wondered, would i need a special paint for that, or will any rattle can work?

Thanks!

Loosen all of the bolts and pry the cover loose with a pan under it. Once it's drained, pull the bolts all the way out. Use brake cleaner to clean out the pumpkin before sealing it back up and adding new fluid.

You can get gaskets, but I always use RTV. I really like The Right Stuff, expensive but worth it.

No need to paint unless you want to, but rattle can is fine.

awesome, is there a special technique for putting in the new fluid? i was thinking it would spill back out if the bolts are not on all the way, sorry for my newb status on this, it is new to me.

i do want to paint them tho, im thinking about going with a bright green, or red. not sure yet.

Sorry I had to LOL on that one.

On the front diff there is a plug in the cover. On the rear diff there is a plug on the upper side of the cast housing in the webbing on the passenger side. Make sure you find both of these and can break them loose before starting anything else.

edit: The plug on the rear end uses a 3/8" drive extension with no socket.

edit2: Put the covers back on all sealed up and tightened before filling with new fluid.

haha, its ok. i deserve a little lol for this one, but this is perfect, i feel much more capable to do this now. thanks!

Also take a flat head screwdriver and clean the crud out of the plug on the rear axle so that the drive extension goes in all the way.

Try finding a gawdamn 10b gasket, locally. :doah:

Just use RTV.
I use the high heat stuff.
Not necessary, but it works. :thumb:
