Almost looks like pieces out of a roller clutch assembly...those flat square pieces look like the springs that hold the roller bearings in place. See if this works:

/\/\0\/\/\0\/\

Rollers are the 0 and the /\/\ are the springs. Of course they are in a big circle around the drum when installed, but if you've had a tranny apart, you'll remember those.

I think it's too heavy to be part of the one-way planetary roller clutch. And it does not look like spring steel, the fracture is rough and grainy.

[Edit] When this first happened, I was talking to a friend about it and mentioned I that the only thing I could think of was a pressure issue (probably blockage) or governor on a 700r4 (which I know nothing about) and was looking for other ideas. Well, I never checked the governor after finding the junk. The more I think about it, the more I keep coming back to the governor. I'm going to pull it tomorrow just for the heck of it...

The problem is that the broken parts have sent junk everywhere. This is making a valve stick so that you can't engage the forward clutch pack except in manual low. It's also possible that the pump is being effected by the shrapnel so that you don't have enough line pressure to engage. The line pressure is supposed to increase as you manually shift from 3-2-1, to maybe the pressure you currently have is borderline.

The more you drive it around, the more damage will be done to internal parts, especially the pump and the planetaries.

Too bad, dude. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

True, but I believe the governor would have dropped it's bits before the pump and should not have gone through the vital organs. In any case, I want to find out if that's what went just to satisfy my curiosity. If the governor grenaded and it looks likely that parts were contained below the filter, I may give it a whirl just because I can (I believe) without major risk or expense, but I'm not holding out much hope...

I'd be real surprised if the governor went. Plastic teeth yes, but all the pieces I can think in the governor are bigger than what you see there. Besides, of all the pieces in the tranny, I'd have to say the governor looks like it's built the most "stoutly".

Schrapnel through the pump will gouge into the housing, leaking pressure, and could tear up the vanes. I'd be surprised if it's anything OTHER (well, major pieces anyway) than the parts to some of the rotating assemblies.

I'm hedging my bets on that anyway. Tear it apart so we can all know. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hmm, how do you get that silly cap off? No bail like I'm used to, and I figured it's a press/friction fit type of thing. But no way to really get to it to pry on it. I'm sure that's how it comes off, but it's being a PIA. I've tried several different tacts but with no success. I had to come in and clean up a cut, figured I would do a quick search for "tricks", but no luck...

I've always just used a sharp screwdriver or something wedged underneath the lip and worked my way around evenly. Might be able to use something like slip-jaw pliers to twist and work it out that way, but obviously gotta be careful not to crush the cap.

That's what I thought. I've tried a couple of times to the point of frustration and got 2 significant knuckle busters out of it (that @#$& heat shield /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif)with no luck at all. I'm working on the truggy now and I think I may try to make a puller later tonight. I want to see what's back there.
