I have to replace my 14 bolt FF axle, and I might have access to a FF out of a 2004 2500HD.

Anybody know if my gears and detroit locker will swap into the aam axle? It would be nice to get the disk brakes and still have a parking brake.

Yes, I believe they will. I have a 03 aam in mine. I think the install kit is different but the gears and locker should be the same.

I have a Detroit in my '02 AAM, same one as the 14bolt. The added width lines up the tires with my D60 front nicely. Spring perches are different. The disc brakes also match well with the D60 front and work great.

I have one in my truck, wouldn’t mess with a older 14b with how cheap they are now adays unless it came with the truck.

Studs are easy to change. Bolt pattern, not so much.

Sounds like this might work out nicely.
Forgot about the studs. I still have metric in the rear and standard in the front. The metric studs were loose when I tried them in my 60 hubs. Did not try standard studs in the rear axle shafts yet. I'm sure there is a recipe to remedy the stud issue, I just haven't figured it out yet.

I'd go for a newer axle with factory rear discs. Not sure what years tho so maybe you're already there.

Question - on the “newer” AAM 14Bolts, can just the hubs be swapped out between the metric pattern wheel stud versions and non-metric pattern hubs ?

I wouldn’t think so. The old ones have the drum pinned from the back side and the new ones the rotor slip over the front.
Never tried it though.

Wasn’t there some years where the newer style AAM 14Bolts had a disc brake setup that was 8x6.5” pattern ?
I could be wrong - just wondering?

They are all 8x6.5 till 2011.
Ultimately what I am getting at is an easy method to get one of the newer AAM 14Bolt SRW 10.5” rear axles that has the 4” diameter tubes and swap out the metric pattern hubs for the 8x6.5” pattern hubs that were OEM disc brake equipped hubs.

I’m not comparing anything to the old 14Bolt axles or about when the pattern changed to metric .
I am curious about hub compatibility from newer AAM axles that both came equipped with disc brakes - one being the 8x6.5” pattern v/s the other being metric ?

Thanks, Tom

@tarussell so you’re talking about the placement of the lug flange between 8x6.5 vs metric hubs?

Based on general interchangeability that would seem possible. I wonder if all of the versions use the same bearings?

Yes - the flange placement and bearing opposing distance dimensions within the hubs ?

If the hubs from each housing played nice with interchangeability then getting a factory disc brake ( with a parking brake ) 10.5” AAM with the big 4” tubes and 8x6.5” pattern and a 72” WMS dimension would be doable fairly easily.
