Ok I'm shopping for a truck, preferably an 87 - 91 "V" series 4 door. Here's my question, is it safe to assume that ALL 91 model ("V" series) automatics are 4L80E's? OR could a truck like this also come with a TH400? I'm curious if the OD trans was an option or standard equipment. Since these are hard trucks to find I know I may have to travel to get one so I'm trying to avoid surprises.

Only the 91 and up trucks will have the 4L80E. The 90 and below will have the TH400. If its a 1 ton I think they came standard with these transmissions. Only the 91 will have the sought after 4L80E/NP205 combo.

I knew the 91 was the only one to come with a 4L80E, I'm just curious if a 3 spd (TH400) automoatic was also available in the 91's. Idealy, I (like everyone else) would like a 91 4L80E/205 truck but I was just curious if that was the only automatic offered that year.

Sorry, didn't mean to state the obvious. I don't know if the TH400 was available AFTER 90 model year in the 1 tons, good question. I don't recall ever seeing a TH400 in anything factory after 1990, except it may have been kept in the hummer behind the 6.2L diesel.

Every '91 V3500 I've seen in the ads, both online and in the papers, all had 4L80E's and not one had a 400. Thats proof enough to me that the '91 year did only have the 4L80E unless someone swapped a 400 in place of the 4L80E (which would be dumb).
