With the rear wheels off the ground, transmission in neutral, how much play or rotation should be in a 14B w/Detroit?

A BUNCH! Probably something like an 1/8 to 1/4 turn of the yoke.

Yeah, he's right, there is a good amount of play there...I think it was 1/4 turn of the yoke...

Detroit=sloppy. There is alot of play in a Detroit. Mine has at least a 1/4 turn on the pinion.

Hmmm...the one on the floor of my carport has almost no play. /forums/images/icons/confused.gif

Then open it up and take a look /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I asked the question because I had my transmission checked and wasy told (thankfully) that the rear diff and about 1/4 turn of play in it. This is what I had when I put it in.

yep, detroits are very sloppy. the one in my 14 moves about a 1/4 and the one i had in my ten bolt had about the same amount of play.

The cover is on with 2 finger tight bolts and it's empty of gear lube right now...everything looks copasetic. The drums are on the ground, and if I spin the yoke it rolls forward, turn it the other way and all I feel is the backlash between the ring gear and the pinion before it starts rolling the other way...maybe 1/8" of play at the yoke itself.

how many miles would you say is on that 14? because if it's new that might be the reason its tight.

i know mine was like that at first.

It was an ex military unit. I was told under 40,000 miles. How much under 40,000 is anyone's guess...it looks brandy new inside though.
