I found a buyer for the burb without the tranny so im pulling it and everything seems straight up except. Those top bolts. Wondering if theres any tricks to it or something that will make it feasible at least?

Jump up under the hood and get them with a medium size 9/16s wrench... Or
Save them for after the driveshafts and crossmembers are out...point the trans down and those top bolts will be staring you in the face.

Just watch ya dont break the dist cap.

stuff like this. watch ebay for these. thay show up all the time. best money i ever spent on them to make life MUCH better at removal/install.

1/2" drive to 3/8" drive great for impact gun use. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...id=355&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

and

then clip this on the end of that ext. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...id=324&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

edit: dont forget the gas pedal switch/bracket. 3 small bolts its out. and the orange wire from pedal to fuse block and then out firewall to tranny side plug. its for the kick down. and get the vac line from intake to modulator on side of tranny.

I really appreciate the quick response man, Just another reminder of why ck5 is so great  , That is the path im taking. So far i got
1.Front and rear drive shafts disconnected on the ends so the transmission/transfercase can slide out without any resistance.

2.Pulled flex platecover which may i note was very well braced from the factory. Much stronger set up than what i got on my blazers, Hell my 76 doesnt even have a flex plate cover and i cant get it on because my exhaust guy routed it wrong :doah:

Im on a little lunch break, plan is to
.unbolt torque converter
.Undo transmission linkage,cooler/vaccuum lines and wiring
.jack up transmission and pull the crossmember
.undo the 2 top bolts
.pull it out

Ill keep ya'll updated

Yeah but your sub is famous, why wouldn't he know it's diesel.:dunno:

Those top bolts are cake if you just get about 2 - 3 ft of extension for a 3/8" drive ratchet(I usually use one 2 ft and 12"), with a swivel on the end right before the socket(or a swivel socket). No binding your motor mounts either.

Good work.

On trucks with the removeable tranny hump, once it is removed, you can unscrew the bell housing bolts from inside the truck too!....thats one thing I liked about my G-10 van, pull the doghouse off and you can sit in the seat and remove the tranny bolts, work on the distributor,etc...no bending over under the hood standing on milk crates trying to reach the distributor,etc..

Thats what i ended up doing :haha:. I had never yet used that many extensions for anything. Was quite a spectacle.

Im definitley installing access panels on all of my trucks when i pull the tranny. I managed to get it done but it was a real pain in the ass.

:haha:, Its the most famous mistake ever made (except for watergate )

EDIT: Does anyone know if my th400 with the 208 adapter will also accept a 203? Im thinking of doing a 203/205 doubler and i know the 203 and 208 are similiar in alot of ways so just wondering?

I recently discovered that with a good engine crossmember and comp.-style motor mounts, this method no longer works :D Not that the motor mounts supporting things that well hurts my feelings. I pulled the crossmember from under my th350/np203(!) and lowered my tranny jack...The jack wasn't supporting hardly any weight and the whole thing barely moved at all.

nope need the outut shaft for the 203 tcase to put in your 400 its the short shaft. 208 and 205 use a few diffrent shafts.

did you click the 2 snap-on links i posted ? that ext is made spec for guys like us doin tranny jobs.

fyi the more ext in the setup the more tourqe you loose if useing a air gun. and if by hand its no fun with 4-5 ext floppin around tryin to get up there.

Ah shame, Ill just go with a custom TC like a atlas or lomax then. Its much better suited to the extreme conditions of offroad competitive racing anyways. You know any custom Tc's that will bolt straight up to the th400 without any shaft swapping? Im going to research it when the time comes regardless but just figured id ask if theres any you would recommend.

I did click the link but all of my expendable cash has already been spoken for the next 2 weeks at the very least. Im going to pick up a set of SRW one tons on the 16th and im buying a 14bolt ff disc brake swap kit for em this week from indy4x4. Gonna be about 1300 total when all is said and done which is a smoking good deal for em, but i net about 1000 a month :doah:. All worth it though since its going to get me one step closer to my racing dreams. Once i have the disc brake swap done ill make sure to grab those tools before i install the detroits and chromo shafts since i gotta be installing the th350/203 combo in my 73 project asap and get that thing running. Cant wait to hear that 400 horsey 350 scream :saweet: .

big bucks for aluminum atlas case.

lowmax only avalible used or nos at this point. no parts run batch till laterthis year so we read online. and if old stock or used you need the lowmax long 32 input. a non lowmax input wont work. the th400 with 208/241/round pattern 205 use same shaft in the 400.

and swapin a shaft is easy job. and if that thing is gona get run good and comp use i would reman the tranny with some upgrades and be done with it.

case saver / shift improver kit / hd clutches.

transgo shift improver kit cheep and great stuff.
transtar reman kits great stuff in there everything you need.
transtar has a case saver kit thay offer for lots of trannys .

I see your point man, i think ill take that route when it comes time to prep the tranny/transfercase.
