Hello all.

My wife and I are about to pull the trigger on this 1984 K5 Blazer (Silverado package) for $1800:

We intend to use it for some mild off-road Wyoming trails, to get to/from our family camping and fishing spots. We're not rock crawling or anything serious, but our cars really don't appreciate the abuse and I'd rather not break them. We'll probably leave it up in Wyoming during the Summers, and keep it in Denver over the Winter.

We took a look and thought the condition was quite nice. Very little rust, sizable ding on the passenger side (I don't really care about appearances), the dash is a bit busted on top (nothing too serious, just some holes). The seats are clean and sturdy. The 305 engine started, ran and drove well. All the power stuff we tried worked fine (windows, locks, wipers, tailgate, a/c, radio, etc...)

Some minor work needed: replace front brake pads, accelerator pedal is stiff enough to give me a workout (likely the cable or return spring, from what I've read here), driver's side door striker and hinge pins need replacing, temp gauge doesn't work.

So I'm just hoping for opinions on the price/setup. I know there's little love for the 305 engine. Most of the 350 setups we checked on craigs, for the same <$2K budget, either didn't call me back (probably already sold) or required a good bit more work when we saw them.

Thanks for any input!

Not bad, if the tranny is new that is a bonus right there. 305 oh well, if it runs good and gets you to the trail and back. Run it till she drops and then upgrade. Looks like a good start to the madness. Oh yeah $25.00 for a membership is the best upgrade....good luck.

Temp gauge.....mine wasn't working either. Found the wire just hanging in the engine compartment and not attached to the sensor on the block. Re-connected and boom, temp gauge worked again! Love those fixes.

For the brakes, you may want to bank on new rotors too. It seems to be more of the norm on this old of truck to just replace the pads. If that's been done a time or two, the rotors are probably going to need replacement. Then new bearings, re-pack the hubs, etc.

Yeah, a little more could get me a later model with injection and/or a bigger engine, but I'm stretching the budget already. I started looking with $1000 as my maximum, until discovering the slim pickings were even slimmer and (much) crappier.

Thanks all for the feedback. Methinks I'll be visiting this forum pretty frequently in the near future.

I was just gonna say both of those!

Funny we had the same issue with the temp sensor.

You know, I have been seeing this thread, finally had to read it. Everytime I saw it, I just could not help thinking about one of my favorite Bill Mauldin cartoons.

Note: Its in the Calvary....
