Maybe Im just retarded but yesterday I had a near miss in my pickup. I mashed the brakes and felt the ABS kick in then it went to almost nothing. I felt the pulsing action then the pedal squished a little more the pulsing stopped and I had almost no brakes. Is this normal? Or is there a problem?

I have avtivated the ABS in the past and felt the pulsing but didnt experiance the massive loss of brakes like yesterday. Also I think this is the hardest I have ever mashed the brakes. So Im not sure if it has a problem or if I just never got it to that point before.

In case your wondering I had some idiot pull out in front of me on the highway while i was doing 60. Probably the closest one I have ever had. Also to avoid the crash I had to literally pass him on the right. I checked my brake fluid and its full. Also the brakes seam to be normal now, and I havent seen any evidence of a blown rear cyl or brake lines.

I don't think the loss of brakes would be normal. Did the feel come back? I'd check the level in the master cylinder, and take a look under the truck. Maybe you blew out a line when you mashed the pedal.

If he blew out a line he wouldn't have brakes now but he said they seem normal. Maybe you bent something that the brake pedal attaches to. In other words I have no idea.

i had something similar like that happen to me, but my master cylinder was the cause. i lost all my fluid, but if yours is still full im sure that cant be it. how are your brakes now, i assume everything is back to normal?

Isn't there a valve (combo?) that slides when/if a line breaks?

The brakes seam perfectly normal now.

It could just be me a weetodd. Maybe its was just normal ABS activation and Im just not used to it. I almost never panic brake like that but this one was just close.

My only other ABS vehicle was my 2000 grand am. I felt the small pulse a few times in that car, but those where just driving hard and braking hard not panic situations.

I have been watching for any sign of leak and nothing yet.

The fluid while Im sure isnt new, it is clean not dark or anything.
I think what I'll do next is go have my brakes checked to make sure the pads and shoes are good.
It is a stocktruck with 35" tires so maybe the brakes just are just not u8p to the job. This truck never tows a load so in daily use it doesnt see heavy braking.

Could be the abs computer freaking out if it wasn't recalibrated to match the bigger tires.

OK today I was driving around town and the brakes "feel" normal but it was warm enough today to have the window down.

So every time I hit the brakes I can hear a "whirdrdrdrdrdrdr" sound It sounds alot like the windshirld washer pump but with a bit of a thud to it. Oh and I have to be moving to make the sound. I am certain this sound is comming from the ABS unit under the hood.

:doah::doah: Now what?

yea i can just imagine that noise in my head haha can you only hear it when driving? it doesnt do it when your stopped?

Yea I can hear it while using the brakes then once it comes to a complete stop it goes away. The brakes are smooth and have a normal feel but I never herd that noise before.

if your drivin two miles an hour and on the brakes dies it still do it? maybe you could have someone try to identify the noise while your in the truck so you can know exactly where its coming from

It does it anytime im on the brakes and moving. I drove around for an hour listening for it I am 95% certain its coming from the ABS unit under the hood. I was hanging out of the truck window on back roads just speeding up and braking people musta thought I was nuts. It gets harder to hear above 35mph and impossible to hear if its there at 50+ but Im pretty sure it makes the noise any time Im moving and hit the brakes.

You probably have a bad wheel speed sensor that is sending a wierd signal to the ABS computer causing it to think a wheel is locking up every time the brakes are applied.
