So I acquired this Heep about a month ago, just kinda fell into my lap and the price was too good to say no to among some other reasons, but anyhoo. So I haven't looked it over, even though I DD it to work. Honestly I've opened the hood once. So it was squealing from the get-go, PO said something about replacing the clutch, something about the throw out bearing, I forget, so I just assumed he didn't replace the throw out bearing, and it's on it's way out, and that was the squeal, it only happened when you first started it. Anyway today I actually stopped and looked at it, thought it was the water pump, then opened the hook and saw the AC compressor spinning, so I found my culprit.
So it's running, in all positions, AC, DEF, floor, vents, etc, etc. Only time it isn't running, is when it's in the OFF position. So on my way home from work I grabbed a can of 134a, wishing to myself maybe it could use a charge and some oil and be good to go. It never blew cold in the AC position (I never even thinked to look at the compressor before, like I said, I kinda care less about this thing) So this afternoon, I hook up the tube to the low pressure side of the port, have the AC on, squeeze and nothing infact some comes out of the can because the pressure wasn't going anywhere, I look at the compressor, wasn't spinning (duh, also no squealing) so I take a stick and tap it, then push and spin it a bit then it engages and starts spinning, squealing, but now sucking down some refrigerant, I put in about half the can, it takes it quick. Still squealing, so I'm like ok, go play with the controls, OFF, DEF, AC, still running in all positions, or when I turn it OFF, I have to physically get it to spin before it frees or loosens and decides to spin on it's own. So finally I have the bright idea, maybe whatever bearings? So I spray it with some WD40, squealing stops, keeps spinning, nice cold AC, let it run for a while, OFF, ON, DEF, AC, OFF.
So here's where I am.
1) Why is it engaging when in other positions that's not AC?
2) To replace bearings, I'm assuming that'll open the system?
I have a tiny bit of AC knowledge. I've recharged (for real, with a machine, not the can stuff) AC systems before, I've replaced entire compressors and other components, but never fixed a compressor. I might end up selling this thing once I get the Blazer up and going, so it'd be nice to have the AC working, but that'll depend on cost to repair.
It might also be the wife's play toy, we just haven't decided yet.
