AC recharge Q

You hook a vacuum to the lines and suck everything out of the system and see if it holds pressure first. Then you fill it and add dye with the freon so you can check for leaks in the future.

It will charge it, but you still need a way to pull the vacuum on the system.

You also need to consider replacing the condensor, since the older R-12 condensors are not as effecient as the R-134a condensors. You can use the R-12 condensor, but it will not attain maximum cooling without a few other parts being swapped out. The orifice tube, condensor, and hoses should all be replaced, as well as all the o-rings in the system. The hoses will work for a while, but will bleed off slowly.

Also remember that the first thing you want to check is whether or not the compressor is any good by jumping the terminals on the low pressure switch. If the clutch doesn't engage and spin, or if the compressor is very noisy, it may need a replacement. If that is the case, a little research on the site will tell you of some better compressors to use in place of the stock compressor, but will require new hoses. You would also need to replace the accumulator and orifice tube if you do this, and it will ensure the entire system is almost completely optimized for R-134a.
