About a month ago I bought a 89' 3/4 ton Suburban and it needs an R12 recharge and there is no leaks in the system that I know of. From what I've read many people decide to go with the R134A conversion but I'm not sure which way is more cost effective. R12 is available on eBay but its around $50 for a 14 oz bottle. AutoZone has a conversion kit for $55 but I don't know if it includes everything I need. I feel like the R134A conversion would be the way to go but I don't know what I need to buy besides the recharge itself. Do I need a new compressor or will the stock one be OK?

This is my first vehicle but my dad is a tech and he has been helping me along. I'd just like to hear some input on what you guys might have to say. Thanks a lot!

The pros and cons of R134 conversion have been discussed here many times. Just search and you'll probably find what you're looking for. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just saying you can have all the information today instead of us filling out this thread for a week. "That I know of" doesn't inspire any confidence. Unless there is pressure in the system today, assume that it leaks.

Sorry I don't know a lot about AC systems but I'll take a look through more threads here. Thanks.
