AC removal..........MIXED messages?? WTF

i just ripped mine out, (compressor, condensor) it gets hot here but when its hot i got the top off my blazer so whats the point in messing with it, and the added weight. yah its not alot of weight but every pound helps. i have pulled it out of everyone of my trucks ive had except my dd. plus pullling the condensor helped my cooling issues. so for my .02 go for it.

Today it was only blowing hot air.. I think she's gonna get pulled. I know where I could probably get ahold of some R12 for cheap or free, but I don't know how I am supposed to pull it into the system? Is it possible to recharge an AC system with limited tools, if you are a shadtree noob wrencher like me?

THEN, the very bad sound of a big hiss,,,,i look out at the engine, and the compressor had just let go, something in the back leaked everything out.....
Sounds like you either lost an O-ring, or either the pressure relief valve or a pressure switch blew out. R4's usually have the pressure switches retained with an internal snap ring. It is rare, but I have heard of them blowing out if the snap ring is improperly installed. The high-pressure relief valves are threaded in, and are designed to vent if the high-side pressure gets dangerously high (and for some reason the HP switch hasn't opened and caused the clutch to disengage first). Having the valve malfunction and vent below their designed pop-off pressure is less rare than blowing out a switch, but it is still rare. Having an o-ring on the hose manifold fail is not uncommon, but they usually just leak slowly rather than blowing out. The usual cause for a leaky manifold o-ring is failure to replace it after removing the manifold - reusing them is a bad idea. One other possibility, assuming you have an R4 compressor, is that you lost a body seal. Like the o-rings, they usually just leak rather than blowing out. Another possiblility is one of the hoses or aluminum hard lines on the manifold failed. Been there, seen that. Fortunately, rebulding the hose assembly and/or welding the manifold is fairly inexpensive. I can't say the same about the Freon you lost... :(

For parts (especially compressors) and assistance, I suggest avoiding regular auto parts stores like AutoZone, Checker, NAPA, etc. Go to a place that specializes in automotive AC stuff and carries good quality parts. You live in North Phoenix, so my suggestion would be AAPAK on Grand Avenue. If you need a hose rebuilt or a line welded, they will be able to help you out. You DEFINITELY want to avoid the rebuilt compressors (i.e. Four Seasons) from the auto parts stores, unless you just like to replace em every few months. :D
