AC removal

The heater obviously gets warm.. The core IS in the box tho, so it's not bad at all... you could run anything an inch or 2 from it and be confident..

pulling out the whole ac/heat would give someone a ton of room right on that interior passenger firewall.. a ton of room, could mount 2 of the summit heaters...

i'll be ducting one of the 2 ducts to the defrost (just run a flexhose up to the factory Y-diverter.) and just leave the other pointing at the floor... little tighter fit in the middle but still doable...

as for heat, i'd say it puts out about 80% to 90% of what a factory unit puts out...

Or a couple of batteries.:haha:

See ask a question and you get the answer from those that know.

I have torn down an a/c truck , and a heater only truck . Both harnesses interchange for the years I had ( 75 and 83 ) . So installing heater only controls and plugging it into the harness shouldn't be a problem if you use a simmilar year heater only truck as a donor . 84 and up had the wipers on the column , so I assume those harnesses interchange like the older trucks did .

The harness plugs into the main dash harness above the radio , then to the the controls , and then through the firewall grommet behind the motor to the fan motor and the a/c components .

You could pull everything out , make a new plate to cover the gaping big a/c hole ( welding is better , but could screw it on and cut the protruding heads off ) , and then cut the hole(s) in the right places for ther heater only box . The heater only box and the a/c box have the heater core in different places .

Not that bad really if you have time and all the heater only truck stuff ahead of time .

As for the a/c compressor bracket , look on ebay for used a/c delete pulleys if you want your same belt to work . Or LMC has them in their catalogue .... for a price .

Are you saying that the same harness is used for ac and non ac trucks? You just need to plug the ac stuff into the trucks harness?

Factory Service Manaul

I got mine from Bishko Auto Lterature: CLICK

Bishko has two prices for the book. The lower price has lower quality photos. I should have spent the extra $$$ and got the one with better pics.

Or check ebay as someone else already said.

I appreciate all the ideas/answers everybody! BTW Ryoken, your electrical work on your project is awesome, I read the whole build thread last night, that is crazy cool!:waytogo: Do you happen to have any pics of how you set up the Mojave, or did I somehow miss it?
I am still debating as to what is the best approach for my truck. Right now, the interior is all original and I am debating as to whether I want to keep it looking that way or, modify the heck out of it. I am even still debating whether I want to run more speakers than the original two, or any radio at all (right now it has a gaping hole where the radio used to be PO took it out). It's all up in the air right now since I am just diving into all of this. I mean it's not like I am restoring the truck or anything (I am going to be modifying the heck out of the drivetrain, suspension, etc). But, I do like the feel of the original interior 'cause we had a Chevy (74) and a GMC (79) when I was a kid. Thanks everybody!

Thanks man, appreciate it... :D

Hopefully I'll be throwing some updates at that thread over the next couple weeks... Just finished painting the rest of the cab copper and putting on my Lund visor.... I'll hopefully remember to take lots of pics in a couple weeks when I do qrters, 1/8 floors, sliders, custom tunnel, etc... Should be fun! :grind: :weld: :hack: :weld: :weld: :weld: :weld:

Anyways, my heater is not in it's final location.. I just have it screwed down to the trans tunnel in front of the tc shifter for now.... Until I finalize the dash/breaker panel wiring, I'm leaving it down there..

You can see it in the bottom of this shot.... Final mount will be directly forward of that on the firewall and turned 90 degrees down...

Honestly, it really is a great mod, IF you dont live in an area with extreme winters... 15 to 25? does fine... 0? maybe not so much..

There is a pretty big dif between the factory AC and heat only boxes size, mainly out in the engine compartment... But I am sooooo glad I ditched mine... Smoothing out the firewall is invaluable to me. Inside and out...

You could easily maintain a "stock" look inside... Just patch the holes and run it behind the glovebox....The only thing I would imagine is you would probably ditch the venting to the dash vents, and just run defog and floor...

Use your imagination whoring..... :wink1:
