Hey all, When I put in my new 383 Stroker in my 72 Blazer I had to use a long neck water pump because of the thicker timing cover for the double roller timing chain so it threw off my pulleys. Now my water pump and power steering pump are running off the crank and the alt. is running by itself. It should be the alt. and the water pump together and the power steering pump should be on its own. It wouldn't bother me accept now no matter what I do I get the death squeal when ever I punch it. I know why its doing it but I just need to know if anyone else has run into this problem and how they fixed it. I have used numerous diferent style and length belts and several belt dressings to no avail. My camera is charging at home and as soon as I get home I'll post some pics to shed some light on my situation. Any thoughts????

I recently swapped a long style pump into my 71. I could not figure out how to get the pulleys properly aligned without swapping out all of the accessories. The short WP measures about 6" from the block and the long WP measures 7 1/2". The belts would not properly align using just the long WP. Soo...

I ended up swapping all of the accessories from a late 70's blazer into mine. This changed; the alternator to the passenger side, changed WP from short to long, replaced my old crank pulley, and swapped in a new PS pump with the brackets and pulley from the donor.

Your easiest solution is to find a complete accessory setup from a motor that was setup with the long WP.

The accessories aren't the problem. Crank pulley needs to be swapped, and your accessory brackets. The brackets will put your alternator and power steering pump into the correct plane.

AJs72K5 is correct. The brackets are the problem, but you will find that attaching the PS pump to a newer style bracket is a bit of an issue. The only original accessory that I used was the alternator. All brackets were from the donor motor.

I have thought of swapping to a late model bracket setup but haven't found a way to do the power steering yet. I have a newer power steering pump bracket but I can't figure out how to hook up my pump to it. Do I have to use a newer model pump?

Not sure why you had to change covers because a double row timing chain will fit under either style of cover although if using a cam button it is recommended to use the early cover because it is built stronger (not thicker). This is all assuming you are using a factory cover and not an aftermarket cover of some sort.

When I changed engines from my stock 350 to my new 383 stroker I thought I'd get away with using all the accessories from the old engine including the water pump but the old engine had a stock timing chain so the water pump fit but with the double chain and the thicker cast aluminum cover it didn't work. I tried to get the old chrome cover to fit but it hit the timing gears because it wasn't deep enough.

My brother in law is a vehicle scrapper and he said he could get me a late model belt set up off of one of the trucks he scraps but I would need to tell him which year to pull it from. Anyone know what years work the best for my first gen?? And should I go with a serpentine set up or stick with the standard style???

if you swap to serp then need reverse rotation h20 pump. other than that its all bolt on.

grab the brackets and pulleys and fan also as reverse rotation fan.

here is a 79 motor in my plow truck with 90-95 serp setup. only problem was american thread bolts for p/s pump needed.

used the 79 p/s pump and fit like a glove on the bracket.

Ok cool so if I use a later model p.s. pump it looks like it will still hook up with my hoses in the same place as the original. Is that only on the 90-95 models?
