So as the title says has anyone added factory AC to a 1st gen that did not come equipped with AC? Can I save a buck this way or should I save my pennies and get a vintage air unit?

The only reason I'd re-install an original AC system is if I was building some kind of "numbers matching" type restoration.....

You'll likely spend a pretty penny buying all the original parts, then more $$$ getting them rebuilt. The final headache would be the cost and aggravation of charging a freon-based system, instead of a more plentiful and cheap r134a (or newer) coolant.

Plus, the factory system takes up a lot of room and is butt-ugly. :D

Vintage-Air all the way.... IMHO. That's the direction I'm headed anyway, and my truck was a non-AC equipped truck originally.

If you were around you could have about a 99% complete factory system I just deinstalled. Tired of tripping over the damn thing.

But if I were you, I'd go vintage air.

thinking the same thing

I was driving in 110 degree heat last weekend, and now the wife told me I have to get a/c in the rig if we are going to do anymore trips like that (up to the mountains, through Sacramento). No way am I going to argue with her if she is telling me to put some money into the rig.

Question to add to the conversation, any benefit of Vintage Air over Classic Auto Air, or Old Air Products.

Fear, were you picking VA because it's the first one that comes to mind?

Thanks,
Jacob

Yup that was the one that came to mind, vintage air is about 1200 for parts + install. I would assume the others are about the same in price..

Yeah, all about the same price. Wondered if anyone had experience with the others, otherwise I will probably go with VA too.

edited to add a couple maybe helpful links:
read through this last night (CAA unit on a truck): http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/0904clt_1967_1972_chevy_trucks_air_conditioning_installation/index.html

Haven't read this, but it's a VA unit on the next model truck:
