I know you can buy these from rogue fab, but I made my own. I still need to change the belts for some shorter ones to get better tension and play with speeds but Im in about 1/3 as much as a rogue fab kit. Made this video for you guys. Enjoy.
Never mind the noise, I need to grease the pillow blocks. Like I said still some fine tuning to be done. Should definitely help with tabs and big holes.
I've thought about gearing my bench top drill press down too--I have seen guys mount another 4 groove pulley in the center of the pipe or tube the table slides up and down on,that adds 4 times as many speed choices..
Mine only has a 1/4 or 1/3 HP motor and the lowest speed is about 1000 rpms or so...not great for large holes..
A friend of mine had a cheap "Central Tool" floor model drill press, which was not really bad quality, other than the crappy motor it came with that was gutless and burnt up in a few years of light use--it had a 5/8" chuck though, and a tilting table..
He found a 120V gearmotor at a swap meet for 10 bucks,it was only 1/4 HP but it had a 10:1 straight thru gear reduction box on it--he had to make a flat plate to bolt it to the existing mount on the press to align the belts, and the bit speed was only about 700 rpms in the fastest sheaves, and he could slow it down to about 50 rpms on the lowest pulley setting...if you were drilling thick steel with large bits with that thing and the bit jammed in the lower speeds,it would about rip your arm off before the motor showed any signs of strain !..
