adding accessory power. HELP!

I want to add and accessory power distribution block in my 91 k5 to power my lights, amps,back-up camera and the such in case i forget to turn them off.
how should I do it? where should I tap into for accesory power?

I'm NOT the the greatest with wiring:doah: , so specific directions would be GREAT!

Along the top of the fuse panel, you will see the single terminal accessory outlets. Some will have wires already plugged into them. This is where you get your power. Connectors can be culled from just about any GM car or truck from about 1981-1995 or so. Late 80's cars usually the best donors due to the number of accessories being run.

Two options here. Either run an auxillary fuse panel that has one (or multiple, doesn't matter) 12V feed, then fuse each accessory accordingly, or run an aux. fuse panel that has a separate wire to it, for each accessory. Since you are running them all off the same source (12V switched ignition) you don't really need a separate feed wire for each accessory from the fuse panel. If you wanted some to be 12V battery for instance, you'd need more wires. :)
 
to run all of that, you'll need some large wire, a high a amperage single-pole single-throw relay, and some fuses. i use 6 gauge wire for my 350 watt amp. a little overkill, i know, but better than burning up wire, or having an underpowered system.

find a "hot in run" circuit to tap into to operate the relay. the positive side will connect to terminal 86. the ground side goes to 85. be sure not to use a "hot in start" circuit or "always hot". neither will get you what you want.

the power supply connects to terminal 30, and terminal 87 connects to your distribution block.

(the terminal numbers are off the top of my head. be sure to double check on the package.)

i'd put an inline fuse right after the battery, then one between the relay and block. for the activation circuit, i'd at least run one on the positive side.

doesn't your amp have an internal relay to keep it off until the rado comes on? that's how mine is. i just spliced a wire in behind the radio fuse.
 
I'll amend my previous comments, if it's that much juice you are talking about, you'll want the main wiring to be a direct battery feed, with the relay being controlled via ignition.

The accessory terminals on the fuse panel use 30A circuit breakers, and relatively small 12V feed wires to the fuse panel.
 
I used Painless Wiring part# 70207 on my '89. It is an add on accessory fuse block. It fit perfectly on my Drivers Kickpanel and it was a clean install because the relay is already on the block and the fuses are the same type. I looked into other blocks but that had remote mounted relays, and different size fuses. 70207 also comes with a dust cover.
 
I thought about the painless harness, but i dont need any constant hot.

so let me see if i,ve got this.....
run power from the battery, through an inline fuse, to a relay,to the new block. run power from the accessory power from the old block to the relay.
is that right?
does anyone have a picture of the stock fuse block to show me where to plug into for accesory power to the new block?
 
relay review:

a relay is just a fancy switch, so the powered item is hooked up just like it would be on a normal switch. that's it. with a regular switch, your finger flips it to close the circuit. in the case of a relay, your finger is replaced by an electrical circuit and and the relay internals (coil, etc.).

here's an idea of how to wire it. the terminals should be numbered:

Thanks for the heads up on those part numbers 89ymmiJ...I've been looking for a way to clean up all of my aux. wiring under the dash and those boxes are perect...
