So im looking to add a factory clock to the blank space on my 84 dash. I assume ill have to cut the plastic cluster to pass the wires out the back. Also unlike the blank space on my 91, the 84 dosent illuminate that space at all. Thoughts?

I believe it will be a bolt in deal on the '84 dash. Even with idiot lights the casting didn't change AFAIK. There were no wires, it will have the same printed flex circuit running it as the other gauges.

You'll have to pull it and check, but it may be possible to run the clock by just adding or moving wires around on the IP connector. Clock would just need a constant 12V source, if the flex circuit in your truck has provision for a clock (doesn't share the + trace with the rest of the ignition switched +) then it should be pretty easy to do.

I'd rather convert to a later radio (factory) with the clock, but that's me.

I guess my concern is not so much mounting it. Rather why that empty pod isnt illuminated now (like it is on my K5). I hope their is a bulb missing vs say no provision for a socket.

Old trucks got to have the tic.....tic......tic....

:)

K5 is a '91? As far as I can tell that position is illuminated on the later trucks for the charge indicator light, which is part of the circuit to get the alternator charging. There were two styles of the 90-91 cluster in that position, I'm not sure why GM ran two different setups, but it may simply have been based on what alternator was in the vehicle. The CS-series needs the resistance of a bulb, the SI alternators did not.

With no indicator in that position, no reason for a light.

Yes its a K5 (91). I know that bay on the K5 has an idiot light of sorts. My 84s has nothing in the lower left pod.

don't forget you will have to drill a hole for the knob to go though

The install was a non issue. Drill cluster so plug fits out back. Drill black plastic overlay, drill clear lens cover. Just 1 problem.... NO TIC TIC TIC!!! Must be a later model clock, quiet as a mouse. :)

Been a LONG time since I had a cluster with a clock in it, they used a plug? Where does it go, straight to the fuse panel?

The factory harness must have included a plug that broke off and plugged directly into the clock. Mine had the plug connected to the clock with about 6"s of wire. I ran 1 to the fuse box and 1 to the ground buss.

Clock harnesses are separate from the wiring. They had a plug that went to the ground tree on the side of the a pillar and a plug that plugged directly into the constant hot of the fuse box.

There you have it. :) Now that you mention it i have seen the harness for sale on fleabay for more then i paid for my clock!
