Adding gauge/drain plug to th400?

I'm using one f the B&m drain plug/ gauge port fittings in my 400. Just need to drill a 1/2" hole and screw it in. Where is the best place to do it so it'll get a good reading and yet not interfere with anything?

My first time inside an auto pan and I'd like to not dick anything up.
 
It doesn't really matter where the sending unit is, as long as its submerged in fluid and and doesn't interfere with anything inside and the wire doesn't get burnt by hte exhaust or torn by anything moving on the outside.

I would pull the pan and check it out and then make your decision. I usually put mine about halfway up the pan height or so. Too low and it could get snagged on debris and stuff. If you have sheetmetal pan you can buy a weld in pipe fitting for a few bucks. Aluminum pans I just drill and tap.

That's what I was trying tofigure out. If I should go pass or driver side.
I don't wanna get in the way of the filter or anything else.
 
You'll see where the filter is when you pull the pan, it's long and flat and comes closer to one side. Just make sure it won't get hit by the shifter linkage (make sure the wheels are chocked) and shift it to 1st gear and or have someone shift it, while it moves, you'll see the rooster comb move and as long as it isn't hitting anything else like the valve body, etc when the pan is bolted on your fine. I think I put mine on the drivers side since there is already the kickdown wire coming out close to there, I just ran it near that one.

On the filter. Is it supposed to have like 1/4" of free movement when bolted up? The filter has a sleeve between valve body and filter then the Bolt head against the filter and there's a fair amount In slip in there. Seems like it should be a bit more tight? How is it supposed to be?
 
The filter does just kind of float there. If you look at the pan they usually have bumps in the pan to conact the filter and keep it the correct distance from the bottom. As long as the pickup tube is seated properly and sealed with an o-ring (1 common trick is to put two orings on there), it will be fine.
