Has anyone had luck with any kind of an additive to stop an oil leak. I have a 92 Mitsubishi Galant that I'm trying to fix up to sale or for a trade in. It's been sitting 4yrs and now has a pretty bad oil leak that is either coming from the back of the pan or the rear main seal. I don't want to put alot of money and work into this car, so looking for a quick easy fix.

Thanks.

Lucas makes some good "stop Leak" but it doesn't always work.......seals wear out and that's just life! Try some and keep your fingers crossed.:waytogo:

You'll be lucky to get 500 for it whether you fix it or not. They don't care, it's just going to an auction or wholesaler.

Unless you go to sell it yourself, then you might be stuck fixing it. If it's a fast leak and a turbo model, I would suspect an oil feed or return line has rotted out. We see that on cars at 10 years not to mention a 20 year old car. If it's just wet with no real drip, maybe a bad seal.

I will probably just put it on craigslist, it's really clean and only 135000 miles. Blue book is around $1500. I'll put it for $1600 and drive it for awhile and sell it to the person who gets closest to $1500. Maybe I'll lower the price $100 a month till sold.

I wasn't able to get out until late and the auto parts stores were closed. Walmart had alot of lucas products but not the oil stop leak. All they had was Bars Leak oil stop leak. I've used Bars Leak products before with success so we will see how it does.

If its just a dried up seal,a pint of brake fluid will help soften and swell up the seal and hopefully stop it from leaking so bad....a lot of "oil stop leak" products are basically just brake fluid with engine oil mixed in with it...

I've used Lucas oil treatment and a similar product made by Marvel Mystery Oil that thickens the oil and can help slow down a gusher--the Marvel stuff can be used up to 50% of capacity if desired, and both can also be used in manual tranny's and diffs also,up to 100%!...but sometimes putting thicker oil or additives in will boost the oil pressure higher and possibly make it loeak worse too,not less...

Never heard of Bar's Leaks OIL stop leak--only radiator stop leak!..be SURE if you use that it IS for OIL leaks!...

Little heavier oil will help as well. I run 15w-40 in my small blocks. They run fine, smoke and leak less.
