Adjusting a 241 question

I have been having trouble with my 241 for quite awhile now. It will pop out of 4wd at will and is a PITA to get back in. I have been adjusting the linkage for awhile and its not acting right. I thought a common sense way to do it would be disconnect the linkage, put the lever and case in 4 low and then crank away untill the linkage met. I had some succes with that but now in 2wd the lever is not even close, I cannot find a difference in 4 hi or low it just seems to go from 2wd into 4wd. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA

I wonder if you have a bent shift fork.....and/or bad/lost shift pads on the forks themselves? How many miles are on the case?
