ok i did a search on it but did not get what i needed. i took the cast piece that holds the adjusting screew on so i could tap it for hydro steering. i know to adjust it right i need to take the box off to get the right preload. my question is it is off road only so i just want to get it in the ball park. ex. just snug. or snug it up and back off a little. or snug it and tightin a little. thanks

dont need to take box off.

nut loose adjust screw in till just feel it get tight. back off 1/4 turn and hold. tighten down the lock nut and your done.

The proper method of adjustment is to have the steering box centered, tighten screw until you feel contact between the sector shaft and rack piston, now attach an inch pound torque wrench to the input spline (have to remove the rag joint and find a socket that fits good enough) and you want to have a reading of no more than 10 inch pounds "going over center" with a swing of 20* on either side of center. This is going to require either a beam type or dial type torque wrench and I prefer a dial type as it is easier to read while turning the input shaft.
