Advanced timing ****ed my pistons

Leak down is important as well and possibly more so than compression. Seen many times where a cylinder had good compression but bad leak down. Think of it as a more thorough compression test.

Hopefully I won't have to do that test but we will see.

I would check something first, the noise you hear does it go away when it warms up you said or when you get off idle?
I have an engine that does that I thought it was a flexplate or piston slap,turns out it was a thrust bearing.
The flexplate moves in and out 1/4" with the crank
When it's idling it's noticeable then you drive it and can't hear it. Been driving it for 8 years waiting for it to fall apart but I should have fixed it a long time ago.
Easy enough fix
To check put a pry bar on the flexplate and try to move it back and forth.
It will also tell you if it is the flexplate.
But after hearing the video it sounds like my engine

Engine makes that noise no matter the idle until the engine is fully warmed. Then it's barely audible. So I suppose it wouldn't be flexplate?

It's not flexplate but could be thrust bearing.
To find out try to move the crank by prying on the flexplate
 
A compression tester is just a simple gauge,with a flexible hose and fitting you thread into the spark plug hole,and you crank the engine over with the throttle wide open,after disabling the ignition coil so it will not start and run on the other cylinders (I remove all 8 plugs so it'll not start,and crank over faster)...if you've lunched a piston,chances are good that cylinder will have lower compression than the others..and its rare and unlikely all 8 cylinders would be affected,as some run hotter than others)..

The camera I mentioned is probably the easiest and best way to inspect for internal damage without taking anything apart..

You nailed exactly what I was going to suggest. That flexible camera scope is pretty incredible. Pop out the spark plugs, scope the inside of the cylinder and look for physical signs of piston slap. To me, it sounds more like an exhaust gasket issue or a loose rocker arm more than anything else. Ive been down a similar rabbit hole to find at the end of it all I needed was a $10 gasket set or 15 seconds of run time without a valve cover on!
 
Been busy with work and both kids had chickenpox. What a month. I will see what I can get done this weekend. I haven't forgot. Still got my check list. I did have the Blazer running the other day and after 30 minutes running, the sound was gone.

To be honest I have set the Blazer project aside for the moment. A struggling European economy has not really given me peace of mind about dumping thousands of dollars more into the Blazer. As you know I am American but living in Sweden and unemployment is pretty high at the moment. I am still working and so is my wife but we both work industry jobs and you know how that goes with a downturn in the economy. Industry jobs are hit very hard. The Blazer has turned into a "can of worms" Without a workshop and with little knowledge mechanically speaking, I am at a huge disadvantage.

As it stands right now. The Blazer has to be re geared in the axles, it has 35 inch tires and 2.73 gears which will destroy the 700R4. After it is re geared I then have to have the timing adjusted for a third time because the shops in Sweden are not good at it. The transmission needs to be upgraded to support the HP from the 383. I believe its a pressure spring or switch. Not sure what it is called. Then the vehicle needs a lock up kit installed on the tranny so the vehicle can have 4th gear (overdrive) I have water leakage from the back cab and seals. Ruined the carpeting and padding. I had to rip out everything on the interior. It is like a metal box now. So then I found cracks in the sheet metal where the front seats bolt into the metal. I have to sand down and prime the metal and fix the metal cracks. There is more but at this point It's just one thing after another. If I lived in America i would have already sold it already. I paid 15k for the Blazer and I am looking at another easy 4k in repairs and material.

So for now the Blazer just sits.
 
Yup, thats pretty much the way it goes owning these trucks. But when thats all done, youll be good until something else breaks..

Iv had mine almost a year and probably put 300 miles on it, barely. I prefer fixing then as opposed to buying them “done”. You connect with the vehicle. Then you sell it and start over
 
Sorry to hear, but your thinking is right. Economically prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Let the Blazer rest, maybe prepare it for long term storage? Then it’ll be in good condition when you get back to it.

Ya I am thinking to sell it at a loss or let it sit in storage until next year. I will see.
