Great seeing the updates on here. There is some very beautiful places in this area, no need to leave the country to see some awesome scenery.

Covered Road
Having reached the tip of the Keweenaw, we turned back South and found ourselves in Houghton again. West of Houghton we visited the covered road. The covered road winds through a section of deep woods, where one can see nothing but trees in all directions (including up in many places). It's beautiful.
After a couple miles of this:
The end comes into sight:
Sad to see it end so soon.

Having finished our time in Houghton, we hit the road again heading South on US-141. Shortly outside of Houghton we found this gas station selling ethanol-free premium vodka:
Shortly after than we bid one last farewell to Lake Superior:
And before long the U.P. was disappearing in the rear-view mirrors:
And we found ourselves back in Northwoods Wisconsin:

Fence
In Wisconsin, as with all other places visited during this trip, we favored back roads and small towns. The following pictures are of the town of Fence, Wisconsin. There isn't anything particularly special about Fence, and it is likely that none of my readers will bother stopping by.
But I liked the name for the town's gas station (The Fence Post):
Carries everything you'd ever need...
Along with the town hall/bulletin board:
But the real reason we drove through Fence is to take a picture of the main street's sign:
Visiting Fence is a trip down Memory Lane.

Other than the 6BT, the trip back to the south country was fairly uneventful. So uneventful, in fact, that few pictures exist of it, aside from rolling over another milestone on the odometer:
Once we hit Green Bay it was back to 4-lane roads again:
After a few hours of 4-lane roads we found ourselves back at home. And that concludes this tour of the Lake Superior shoreline. Tune in next year for an even longer Lake Superior trip!

Thanks! Yes, we did get onto a few dirt roads (and one lawn) during the course of this trip. We did several off-road hikes, too.
Mostly, though, it was a 1600-ish mile test drive for a truck that hadn't seen road time for several years. I think it went phenomenally. Our one mechanical issue was predicted and caused very minor delay. A slow coolant leak left us with 3/4ths of our radiator dry. I was amazed that the fluid level dropped that far before the temp gauge started to rise. And it didn't rise far, either, before I pulled over and added coolant. I think my radiator is way oversized for cruising through the cool summers of the Northwoods (no A/C required). Either way, 2.5 gallons later (if I recall correctly) it was great!

Amazing! 1: Glad you got to do the trips and enjoy it. 2: Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! I've always found trips to be great fun (and I just got back from another one). What's not fun for me is posting up the pictures. So I have several thousand miles' worth of unposted trips.
Maybe I'll get to them someday.
Glad to know some folks are enjoying these.

But with that encouragement I will resurrect this thread. Jumping back to the summer of 2012, Wifey and I completed our trip and returned to the Mississippi river valley (IA/WI border) where we were living at the time.
Wisconsin's Southwest corner is called Driftless Wisconsin (for geological reasons), and the landscape is filled with hills and valleys. Tree-filled slopes descend to streams, fields, and dairy cows. This is dairy country. It is also the background for our next several trips.
These pictures are about 15 from the Mississippi river (on the Wisconsin side). Just a fun trip from right after the leaves fell.

This section was more of a stroll through the woods than a drive through them.
Returning to the truck, we drove down the leaf-fallen streets. One tree had missed the leaf-dropping memo.
And then we cruised down a few gravel roads. They are a beautiful respite sometimes...
