Advice for newbie

I looked around for awhile but couldn't find what I wanted. Could someone start a list for beginners like me as to where to start on basic maintence, basic parts that probably should be replaced, what to watch out for etc?

I just bought a m1009 and I know maintence was performed on it but i dont have any actual data. So my plan would be to do an oil change, transmission flush, diff flush etc. What all else is recommended for basic maintenance?

I've read about the fuel tank flush and the Wellman GP's but is there anything else that I should be aware of? Maybe word it in layman's terms?

1 other question, What exhaust is recommended for the 6.2's that will help out MPG as much as possible? I would like to redo the charlie foxtrot of the exhaust on it now.

In addition is there any threads that I should pay attention to that aren't sticky's that could be usefull?

Has it been sitting for awhile? How does it drive? I would flush the radiator, lube it up, make sure you check all the fluids and just start at the front and work your way back. Check all that you can!
 
It has been sitting for about two weeks or so from what i know. Runs pretty good. only a little smoke under acceleration but it goes away pretty quick. Seems to have more just as much power as my 350 carb'ed in my c-20. Doesn't have an issue with starting, it does have a GP push button under the column. I'm brand new to the diesel world and just curious as to what to expect. It's a non turbo which is fine for me.

And use fuel additives, these old engines don't like the new ULSD much so use the additives to help your engine and Injection pump stay alive.
Also something that is needed on every vehicle and not many people do is to flush the brake fluid every 2-3 years.
I guess you can leave that for last but at some point do it.

Cheap exhaust upgrade is to just get some Cherry Bombs and slap them in the exhaust in place of the factory mufflers. Maremont (the makers of the real Cherry Bomb) actually makes an application just for this. I have the part number at home if interested. I did that on the M1008 I used to own and got a nice little seat of the pants increase.

Best setup would be something like a single 3" setup. That's what Banks' kit comes with. I'm sorta starting to plan out something like this.

Good. Means it's meant to help with the ULSD fuel.

Well I hear that stanadyne is the best, but I have yet to try it.
I did use an additive for a while that I really liked, it was expensive but I could really feel the difference when I drove it ACES II was the name, 4x4xgod on this forum used to sell it but he left the company now so i don't get it.
Now I use LIQUID MUSCLE and i I like it, it's cheap, gets me 20% more mileage and it's available at most truck stops (I drive an 18 wheeler so I am there all the time).
Before I went on big rigs I used the walmart staple, can't remember the name but go to walmart and you'll find it, it worked and it's not expensive either, just be carefull with the quantities, you can go a little high on the concentration, but if you go more than double in the summer time, you will get some explosions in your exhaust, ask me how i know :whistle:

In the winter, some recommend going double the dose, and even triple of your fuel gelled up, but in the summer you don't want too much.
 
So far I've picked up some rotella t + filter, new fuel/water filter and some diesel kleen that K5Dreamer used in his diesel purge writeup. I'll be getting some stanadyne additive today. My plan so far it to the an oil change, swap fuel/water filters and add the additive. I need to try to fix the gas gauge and the lights in the cluster. Once that's fixed ill see about trying my hand at the diesel purge. I still have to track down an annoying sound coming from the front end somewhere that only pops up when she goes over a dip or pothole.
 
What brand filter? No cheap FRAM or Purolator/whatever crap.
 
FRAM sucks. Take it back and get a NAPA Gold (rebadged Wix) or find a Wix, ACDelco, Mobil 1, etc filter.

It is inexpensive, and it WORKS! Without it, the truck runs like chit. (Thanks to ULSC)


Change your fuel filter every 6 months

Change your oil ever 3 months, it doesnt use regular oil, get the Rotella-T, formulated for diesels

Ill have to make a trip out to P-West to get the stanadyne but i did buy the Rotella triple protection 15/40W. I am loving the diesel and my neighbor's are hating it. Thanks for all the Information! I feel guilty that I'm doing all this to the blazer and im still waiting for parts on the k-20 while it sits there slanted and broke.

I haven't put the fuel filter on yet though.

Just run it till the next oil change and then switch to the better filters.
As long as you monitor the oil pressure guage and don't run your oil more than 3 months you will be OK for now.
 
If this is going to be your daiy driver, expect that it will start to run better the more you drive it. The military obviously didn't drive them much. My K5 was sitting a long time before I bought it and it ran crappy for first couple thousand miles. Now it is sweet. Clean fuel is critical. I'd convert that box style filter to a RACOR. They tend to leak. I researched and selected a model 215. Just Google Racor.

Walmart brand TCW 3 Two stroke mix (for outboards). Mix it a 1/2 oz per gallon. Its cheap when you buy it by the gallon and works very well as a diesel addivive for pre ULSD trucks. Lubes the pump and injectors better and for less money than most all the additives on the market.
2 stroke oil makes a noticible difference in my 6.5 TD. Engine is quieter and has a little more power. VS untreated fuel.
