Well, I've tried some searches both here and throughout the web. Main problem is that I'm on dial-up since they don't offer DSL where I live (I know, thinking about satellite but they keep on saying that DSL is "coming soon" so I keep limping along.)

Ok, here's the problem: got a line on an '82 Suburban with a Banks turboed 6.2. Personally, was looking for a diesel so the Banks is just a bonus. Has ~165k miles, 4x4, but is a half-ton for $1500.

What I'm looking for is what transfer, trans, etc. that it might/should have and if this is a decent price for a normal wear and tear Burb. Has a trans with 300 miles on it (supposedely), new batteries, and sundry other bits and pieces, but don't know if the 6.2 C will live behind the turbo well, or what the actual differences are between the C and J. I'll be cross posting to the diesel forum as well, so mostly looking for advice/information on the Burb portion and what drivetrain pieces it has before I leap in.

Thanks for helping.

no useful info besides i saw that for sale....and passed cause i don't want a 1/2 ton.

I'm with you on that....wanted something besides a half-ton, but it's for the wife (finally convinced her that the '05 Magnum breaks too much and costs too much to fix) so figure for a few months payments on the Magnum, I can do LOTS of stuff to a Burb.

Just haven't ever really thought about one until now. Figure worst case, I can "borrow" the 6.2 for my K5.

I just have a hard time thinking teh 1/2 ton stuff in a burb is a good idea.

But, that motor is far from a power/torque monster, so maybe teh drivetrain would hold up well.

Consider what rpm that will be spinning w/o an overdrive trans, old diesels at high rpm's aren' thappy or quiet. I'm pretty sure it was a 3 speed auto.

I found my burb for $1200 not running.
It's a 3/4ton with the 6.2 and an ATS turbo.
I think it was well worth the money just for the turbo, still haven't had the time to get it running, but I would have still bought it if it was 1/2 ton.
I have a set of 3/4 ton axles I could sell you cheap if you want to upgrade, and the tranny is definitely a 4 speed 700 for the 1/2 ton burb of that era.
Also if you need help or just company, I am not too far from you in Lincoln, CA.
I have some knowledge, lots of tools as well as parts, and like to work on trucks. :D

Good deal!! Actually, I work in Marysville so you're even closer than you think. :wink1:

As for the 3/4 ton axles, I KNOW that I would be interested in those as I'm in a transitional thing on my 74 K5 right about now. Got the engine out and what started as just tossing an engine in to actually get it running turned into a disassembly. I'm sure no one else can relate to that though, right?

I'm thinking about finding another 6.2/turbo setup for it and doing the doubler thing now instead of later. Then, got to have bigger axles so that I can only have to stock 1 set of parts for both of them. At least that's the logic I'm using on my wife. So far, it's working.

I'll have to look you up and swing down your way for a visit as I'm working on getting more tools on a regular basis, but don't really have anyone around that likes to wrench on anything, much less trucks.

Put me down for occasional wrenching in Sac area. I'm in davis, and dont' have much time to wrench, but im workign on getting a 91 burb, so keep me in mind!

I also have a Banks turbo setup and an engine, I had plans for them but I have too many projects and now short on cash so money talks, I haven't listed anything for sale recently but I have lots of stuff that can be had so ask about what you need or pay me a visit and browse thru my parts and vehicles collection.:D

Banks and the 700R4

I have a 85 suburban with a 6.2 with the Banks power package. The stock tranny lasted exactly 124 miles after I added the turbo. I'd recommend rebuilding the transmission asap with all the heavy duty parts you can get. I've been really happy with the truck since the transmission overhaul. I'm running 4.88 gears and 39.5 IROKS on a 14 bolt rear and the 10 bolt front. I break the front regularly but I haven't located a D60 at a decent price yet. Good luck!

I bought a rusted K30 with 454/TH400/np205. Runs excellent. Then bought a Burb cheap with a so-so drivetrain but very good body. Now I'm just debating what tires to run as I swap the drivetrain from the K30 to the Burb. Either Q78-16 or 38"SX's or 39.5" TSL's. Always wanted a 1ton Burb.

sounds like a great plan! one ton burb will be sweet!

just hope you like spending time at the gas station with a 454/400 combo :doah:

Thought of that too. I figure I'm getting to 50yrs soon, so time to start doing stuff instead of daydreaming about the future. Like Jim Morrison said 'The future is uncertain and the end is always near'. Can't let the price of gas make my decision - it will never be the 'right price'. :(
At least I'll be a somebody - when I'm driving it anyways.;)

Didn't mean the gas thing to discourage you, who cares if gas is expensive. Don't think anyone here is loving the mileage of their trucks.

At least your burb will have some balls....my stock 91 3/4 ton wiht a 350 isn't winning any races.....

No discouragement taken - I took it as a humourus (sp?) remark in good will.;)

Your right though, I'm sure I'll be doing this when filling that fuel tank .... :doah:

It must be the almost 50 thing. I 'turn' 50 in September, and am putting together the .030 over 454 to go in my '82 3/4 ton. Now if I could just find a nice NV4500 to replace the stock 4 speed.

Torque is good, more torque is better :)
