I was doing a burnout the other night and I broke the rear axel, it was stock so not a big deal. I have an 86 K5 with 35's. Now I need to get a new axel and I am a little ignorant on the subject. I am thinking about a dana 60, but I dont know how easy it is to install. Please help me out.

im thinking that you have 10bolts front and rear..since your stock.....your best bet would be to replace the broken axle shaft(is that what you broke???))) that would by far be the cheapest fix.... the next step would be to get a 14bolt Semi-floater(6lug) and swap that into the rear...next step would be to go 3/4 ton and put a FF14bolt out back and 8lug outers on the front, this is what ALOT of guys do. and then the ultimate cost/strength would come from a 1ton swap....D60 front and 14bolt/D60rear...the only advantage besides ground clearacne on putting a D60 out back would be gear ratios(numerically higher than 5.38)

do some searching on all of the above and you'll find pages upon pages of info....

oh yeah

hey thanks for the advice. I will check that out, but the money is not really an issue. If i am going to do it, I am going to do it right. I want to be able to push my truck very hard. Everything is new except the axels and frame.

then go 1ton...for sure... get a SRW(single rear wheel) D60 front axle and a matching 14bolt rear....i was lucky and scored both with 4.56 gears and a detroit out back for 1300bucks.....so far, just in axles/steering/drivetrain...i have just under 2800bucks....that's with crossover, rear disks,d-shafts etc.... do you jsut wanna run 35's??? or go bigger???? look for axles out of a CUCV pickup(military truck) those are what i got and are the best bang for the buck.... good luck man, and let us know what you decide to do.

x2 1 ton is the way to go. the axles will bolt right up, if you get a 14 bolt out of a 1 ton you will have to move the spring pirches, if you get a 14 bolt out of a 3/4 ton it will bolt right up. the 60 will bolt in.

remember if you go 1ton. You will need new rims and tires. 1ton axles are 8lug and need at least a 16inch rim. You can fit a 15inch rim on them but need lots of grinding.

im runnin 15's on mine....better tire selection if you ask me....and it was worth the grinding....the amount you grind will depend on the backspacing you get...i heard with 2.5inches you won't have to grind...but im running 3.25 and i had to grind for about 4hours or so....no biggie...grind once, and your done...just my 1/50th of a dollar.

boy, lots of threads with everyone going to 3/4 and 1-tons lately. also you can fit 15" wheels, with NO grinding or spacers, if you get wheels with at least 2.75" backspacing, i have a set on my 1-tons.

if you need 1 tons.. d60 front (35 spline outters) and 14 bolt rear with disc brakes.. pm me I got a bud that has a set.... $1000 firm is what he wants...

4.10 gears

I am NJ, and I was sort of looking for what that has just been rebuilt. Money is not really an issue, so I want to do the best.

yeah we will see if yet the perfect build truck will go 1 ton...

ryoken what did he say??? did you call him?

oh yeah since I have a front d60 / 4.56 / detroit and 14bff rear / 4.56 / detroit / azz-kickin rear disc kit with eldorado calipers I dont think I need those... :haha:
