Advise for buying cars from dealers...

Holding peoples keys, 'bringing in the closer', having you wait for hours hoping they can wear you down etc etc etc. That stuff is almost universal, and pretty much sucks.

I agree that that stuff sucks.

I am lucky to work somewhere with a long history and a desire to keep a good reputation. If I end up with your keys in order to do an appraisal you get them right back. I have customers walk around their car with me and ride with me if I drive their car.

Keeping your keys is an act of desperation and just wrong. Closers are stupid. We don't have one. If I didn't show you the right vehicle and present you with a deal that you are happy with then why bother bringing in someone else.

When I bought my truck I dealt with the typical crap too. Being left in one office after another. for what? to be told "I have to talk to my manager". It's all BS.

Find a place that treats you right and buy a car/truck from them. If you buy from the place that treats you bad because they beat everyones deal you deserve to be treated bad.

Service costs money. Nothing made me appreciate good service more then selling cars. I tip bigger, say thank you more, and send letters of appreciation to managers. I go to work everyday to have customers hate me and think I'm scum. Because I am a GMC man. I love the brand and believe in it. Customers can tell.

I'm not going to stand next to you while we both stare at the truck. I'm going to give you information that will help you decide. It will be biased info. I'm gonna tell you how this feature or that is better then what Ford/Dodge/Nissan/Toyota offer. Same as watching a tv commercial.

If price is all that matters then you will always end up with the cheapest product/service.

thats the key, tell them what you want, make them come down, dont let them sweet talk you either, make sure they know your willing to buy anywhere and they are not special. the best deal wins. never buy it for what they are askin for it. they can and will come down if they want your business.

poker face. a good wingman can help, too. my dad asks for my help throughout the whole proccess. when i buy one, i take care of it all, up to the very end, then bring him up there the next day and get his opinion before i put pen to paper. it's good to have a second knowledgable opinion.

heres a thought--

Hey GMC- why don't you sell him a truck out of the pool and have it drop shipped to his nearest dealer. Just like the fleet guys do???

Good and bad info in here. I have worked at a dealership of some kind for the last 17 years. Your buying experience will only be as good as the salesman you have. The young guys we have here are awful.
I agree with the "get the fleet sales guy". He deals in quantity. Make a little on a bunch instead of a bunch on a little.
I also agree with getting the internet pricing. Having your own financing is better. Not trading your car in is also a good statement, but some people just don't have the time or ability to buy then sell. What you can do in that case, is to tell the dealer you are not going to trade in, get the price of the vehicle you want, then "change your mind". Doing this will let you see what they are really going to give you for your vehicle.
If you go through the dealer financing, be real careful. Read everything a couple of times, and, if possible, take your own notes when you are talking the deal. That way you can referr back to them when the signing time comes.

Do remember........ If they give you a payment amount, and you say it is too much, and they come back with a smaller payment, they just added a year to your payment time.

cause thats the job of the fleet salesman here. I got smart and got out of general retail sales. I sell commercial vehicles now. Dump trucks, box trucks, that type of vehicle. It comes in any color you want as long as its white.:D Before I sold trucks I was driving them. I have things in common with the customers and understand how they are using the truck.

If you can find a car guy who sells and not a car salesman you will buy every vehicle from them and tell all your friends. Somebody in your area posted earlier that they were in sales. give them a chance. at least you have something in common. My boss would eat crow if I sold something because I'm on here all day.

good call, definitely 'watch out' for the old payment game. There is a lot of stuff going on there that could be skulldugery. That is why I negotiated a total price. I was buying during GMACs 0.0% financing promotion... so monthly is just total divided by 36 (in my case, 3 yr loan). Having a small solar calculator in your pocket when you go would be a good idea. When I was at the dealer, I would state a total price... they would come back with a payment. One time I asked the guy, "hey man, you have a calculator I could use?"... he seemed caught off guard and said, "uhh, no... not really". Yeah, whatever. I sat there in front of the guy and did long division the old fashioned way. lol!
