So I have had this firebird sitting in my garage for 16 years.
It's the 400 version, auto th400.
It's missing the original hood with the tach and scoops.
The po used unleaded until it started running like crap.
Heads need hardened seats or I need new heads.
Heads are too expensive but I have another option.
I have a 454 chevy from a 93 burb and I have a mpfi conversion kit.
Also a 4l80e.
I am thinking about putting the engine in and keep the original engine in case I want to do a restoration at any point.
Here are some pictures.
Let me know your thoughts.

Put the running engine/trans in it, keep the old parts for slow build up, do burnouts NOW. Just don't slice it up a bunch to do the swap..

OR, sell said engine/trans and buy heads :waytogo:

It'll be worth more later with the Pontiac engine, and worth more numbers matching. If you've had it for this long, what's the rush? Fix it right, this kind of car is worth keeping to it's origins...

I believe we have talked of this car.

Your never gonna sell it.

So get it going with the 454. But only if you can make it work by bolting crap in. Which I would think you could. Then go have fun and rebuild the poncho stuff and bam! You gotta play with it for a while but it's still orginal

That's kind of my thoughts.
I have too many cars and this one is parked in my neighbor's garage because he bought it and took it home and after a month changed his mind so he offered to leave it there till I sell ir figure out what to do with it.
It's been 2 years.
I feel bad.
I am trying to get rid of a car that is in my garage now and then I will bring it and slowly start...

I know a guy in Wyoming with an empty shop bay...just saying

Do a build on it. I've got one sitting out front right now.

Started out as a sprint 6cyl. Now has a 400-M21.

The AZ sun has burnt the shit out of the paint and interior. Pontiac engines are expensive to rebuild. They do make good torque though.

Been on the fence about selling mine. Kinda short on space to do a full build which it deserves.

As far as hoods go I have the ram air hood and hood tach, unfortunately the tach died on it many years ago and they're kinda expensive to have rebuilt. Was thinking about putting a 69 hood on it w/ the intakes up front.

Rebuild the 400...
- Replace the 3.75" stroke crank with an inexpensive aftermarket 4.21" stroke crank with 3" mains
- Rods are rods (the 400 rods will work or you can spend as much as you like on aftermarket rods)
- Pick your favorite 455 piston
- Find some 6X heads and do mild porting / gives you roughly 9:1 CR
- Pick a cam with 220ish/230ish duration @ 0.50 (stay away from cams with lift over 0.550") Crower has a couple that I've had good luck with)
- All your accessories are the same / you're a bit limited on intakes due to hood clearance
Nothing trick / not too spending & not a camaro.
