My 98 Sub 1500 with 5.7 Vortec /4L60 OD.
Needs;
a catalitic Converter Replacement,
"Again"
It has dual exhaust,Factory style
aftermarket mufflers
and
4 Oxgen sensor's,2 upstreme, 2 downstreme,
Which we replaced all just a month ago,,
and A Cat was replaced,with a cheep one,,$ 55.00
My Son N' Laws + Daughters call,;)

>>>I guess you get what you Pay for,:haha:,
(The other older one is still working
(3 years back was $ 200.00)

And it went back to acting up;before "we" replaced the cat
poor acceleration after idling,20 minutes
or intermitent throtle while depressed
( after 40 minute drive,,)
(last 4 previous month's
Turning off the engine for ten minutes, and a restart
It will limp home, :doah:

The code; from a Snap On scanner from Downstreme Ox sensor
Sudjgest's to my Son that the New cat is junk,

So I will take it tommorow or the next day
to replace it!
with a matching one, for the Otherside,

What Advice can you give as far as your experiance's

A catalytic convertor will go thousands of miles UNLESS the vehicle is burning oil or is running excessively rich. I would suggest having someone have a look at this before throwing money at a new Cat. Just because the scanner shows a code for a downstream 02 sensor doesn't mean the Cat is bad.

Thanks for the reply
What could make the engine run rich on the Vortec,
After warm up?

We replaced the Airfilter Saturday,,late ,
but I will also check air filter box "intake"at inner fender,,
for obstruction tommorow,just in case,,wasp nest,or simular,,,:eek1:
tomorow,,
maybe also
A upsteam air leak Exhaust Manifold Conection?,
Intake Gasket,?

Most of the times a 02 sensor code is just simply a bad 02 sensor. Usually the left and right 02 sensors are the same (with maybe the exception of wire length) so i would try swapping sensors side to side (assuming the wiring is long enough) then clear the code and drive it around and see if it pulls a code for the opposite side now and if it does replace the sensor.

The upstream and downstream sensors are usually different just to clarify i'm talking about swapping the downstream sensors only from side to side.

I don't think the cat is necessarily bad. Most of the time they will set a P0420 or P0421 when the cat(s) is (are) bad. The cat may be plugged but that is almost never intermittent, when they're plugged they're plugged and you don't go very far very fast.

What codes are stored specificly? (code numbers please)
Have you checked the fuel pressure when the truck is acting up?
What are the long term and short term fuel trims reading?
Have you cleaned the MAF sensor recently?
What other service work has been performed recently?

Just got off the phone with My Son who had the Scanner,
It was a P0420 code,
And he had just installed the O2 sensors a month ago,

My Son is A Transmission Builder/Auto Tech,
working for AAMCO in Bryan/Colledge Station,
and is familar with the Suburbans problem's,,

I value each and every one of you Members Input's,,
as I see from your combined help,
We will get it sorted out,

Today I R N'R airfilter assembly,
Cleaned exterior/interior dirt and Debree,
Checked Fenderwell for obstructions,none found!
Cleaned/Dried Mass Air flow sensor unit,
Disconected Batttery, Clean ,,then reconected!

And will test drive when the Grandkids get here from school,,
:wink1:6 :wink1:8 :wink1:11 yrs old,,whats wrong with the bourrbon???
(my toughest critics)
:confused:I have not found a way to measure fuel pressure,
on the Vortec,
but I am sure one of you can steer me in the right direction,

as I have not bought any conector cables,,or software,,
for Laptop computer set up..

Thursday
Update; using road test after,,,above The problem was stiil threre,
I went to mufler shop, had the Even side Cat replaced,

Then went for road test ,,after "battery diconect" "clearing',
1 hour freeway driving,,fine
2 hrs or town driving,,fine
3rd hour later on rural road,, it started bogging again,,
at only half throttle,,?

I returned to Muffler shop and instaled;
the odd side cat which was realy hot,,
(they advised it was Bad the first time)
then replaced (waranty the Orileys part's
the Downstreme O2 sensors, which were smoked white,,
and were going south,
nextday

Added a Schader valve test hose/Fuel PSI Gauge,
stuck it out of hood, near Cowl Seal
Tied it with shop towel and bungi cord to face windshield,
idling it showed 55 psi,,,
shut off engine disc batt,cleared,

(meanwhile I changed the Drivers side head ,,
coolant temp Sensor, it was not reading,,
over 108 degrees, now it reads 180 after warm up,
checked oil,H/20,

AND went for another test drive,
It drove fine,,acelerating 60 psi at 15- 60 mph
idling at Light or stop sign,, 55 Psi

Then while using slowly acelerating
just a Qtr of thottle,60- 70 mph easily
ocasionaly 4-6 secounds of
1/2-- 3/4 wot throttle just fine

and acelerating it would go to 61 -64 psi,,,
and back off to 60 psi when you let off at 60mph,,

till 1 hour later,it went back to its old habit of bogging,
at 1/2 to 3/4-and wot!

I went home and ordered,, the computer cables;
Sudgested by the members of C/K5
for both My truck's,combo kit ORB1-ORB2,
87 Jimmy 4X4 FS,5.7/700-R4,
98 1500 Suburban,2wd 5.7 Vortec,,

now I have to pick a Software to Try and Buy,,
and learn some,,answers,,,
from your Q'' n A'',,,Thanks till later

Last night while cold,,"dark and rainy"
And Pulling A small "Trailor"!

The fuel pump started making the Test tool,,
(Sticking out of hood),,,,Fuel PSI gauge needle,,Quiver violently
("55-60 PSI),,,,>>> but No Volume,,ha ha ha!
it has been rock steady 60 psi in the cold weather for 2- weeks

and it Lost speed while SUV was pulling a trailor,,had to Limp home and stoped several time on side of road to let failing Hot Fuel Pump Cool,,
Only to make it 3-4 miles at A time, ""when rested a half hour"
60 -55 -45 -40 -30-20 mph bwawwwwwhhhh!:o

1998 Vortec 2wd Sub Fuel Pump

My Problemns Are Fixed totally,
The aftermarket Airtex Fuel Pump Module Unit;
was replaced before,,Several time's! 2x+
and was showing by test Guage Great Pressure 60 psi with a drop to 55 psi
but Volume Sucked,

But keep in mind;
It had been abused by repeated Low fuel tank Gas Level's,
>Almost Six days a week, and a 8-to 20 minutes Idling!
and before we headed home it was always on "Empty"!

Plus parking it on Realy steep grade's and leting it Idle in the evening
and It Shortened Its Life!
Mostly Not enough fuel in tank to keep the pump cool in
Hot Texas Weather!

Our old bussiness location,,
> Had such a realy steep Drive Way/ Parking at the shop
we never gave it much thought,

1998 Vortec
The Airtex unit
with a External Upgraded Wirring Harness,,,,
that is plug n play if you have a Airtex Replacement,Pump!

But to go back with AC Delco or Delphi Pump;
Unit you need the "Old Style
>>>Original Wiring Pigtail Assembly 3- 4 foot long

>>>>Did they ever have a recall???:eek1:

>>>As the original A/C Delco Pump;
had burned/melted the wiring as well as the Pump in the past!
