aftermarket gauge install

That one won't work either if your sending unit is bad.
Are you positive it's the gauge that's bad?

it reads past the full mark all the time
Then don't replace the gauge.
It sounds like either the sending unit is bad, or more likely the wire from the tank to the gauge is shorted.
Or you have a short on the back side of the gauge cluster.

Could be as simple as a bad ground. If the ground pops off of mine it goes past full...

ok i found a ground wire that comes from the top of the gas tank and jamed under a rusty washer, i stripped some of the rubber off the ground wire and the whole wire is green and carroded should i replace this?

grab a multimeter and test the pink wire coming off the sending unit. Ground the meter to the frame where the sending unit ground is and test the wires for ohms. Then fill the tank and test again. It should change and depending on your year truck, 0-90 is pretty popular. If it works, tap into that pink wire for the new gauge, ground it, and power it.

That is the ground for the sending unit and fuel pump. If that was bad your truck wouldn't run.

Sounds like the culprit to me. Replace that and ground it to a clean spot on the frame and I bet your gauge works:waytogo:
