While putting together my 383 project(which has to be damn near 6 years going now) I couldn't locate a good oil pump driveshaft in my spare parts. So I ordered an aftermarket one when I ordered my new oil pump. Instead of using the old plastic sleeve to line up the driveshaft with the input on the oil pump, the new shaft has a steel sleeve on it. I thought this was a neat feature. However the sleeve is retained to the shaft by a roll pin. Something about the idea of the shaft spinning at a high rate of speed makes me feel like that pin will someday succumb to centrifugal forces and fly out of the shaft.

So my wonder is, does anyone have experience with these? And if so, do you think it would be crazy of me to just throw a quick tack weld on that roll pin? The shaft was cheap so if for some crazy reason I ever HAD to remove that rollpin, buying a new shaft wouldn't be an issue.

If no one has a clue what I mean I will try to take a picture when I get home.

There are no issues with the roll pin coming out. Don't forget that the oil pump is driven by the distributor which in turn is driven by the cam which rotates at half the crank speed. :deal:

If the roll pin is centered in the shaft all centrifugal force will be canceled out...It would have to be offset to gain any force...if you are that worried about it,,knock the pin out, douse it with red locktite and drive it back in....or just tack the ends with a mig..

personally, I tack the pick up to the oil pump housing,,but I haven't ever seen a pin come out of the drive shaft sleeve..

Yea I am going to tack the oil pump pickup in place too. I realize the pump shaft doesn't spin super fast, just one of those silly things I'd hate to lose a few k to, ha.
