The factory air cleaner housing has a connection coming from the bottom middle, kind of an over sized vacuum connection. Can someone tell me what that originally connected to?

crankcase pressure relief. all it does is just take the pressure buildup from inside the engine and recirculate it into the intake

You're talking about the breather, right? This is smaller than the breather by quite a bit and connects to the bottom of the air cleaner. Maybe I'll have to get a picture. If you aren't talking about the breather, what specifically does this thing connect to?

if its one the bottom of the intake piece and has a hose coming off of it it should go to a L- shaped fitting on in valve cover. thats the thing im thinking about

Here's the connection I'm talking about. You can see it clearly at the lower right:

I got myself an air cleaner from a 1990 truck. It has no breather cutout on the side like my 83 air cleaner. I'm guessing that I should get a 90 degree fitting to plug into the valve cover and route that to the spacer/collar thing under the air cleaner. Is that right?
